step 1: float the eyes
It takes a good eye and a lot of careful practice to draw the eye in exactly the right flattened-ellipse shape. Draw ellipses repeatedly until you get one that looks like a Frisbee and then draw the rest of the image around it. Do not use basic shapes because they give the drawing an unwanted feeling of 'form'.
