The idea is that one of the purposes of the Day Care Center in the Pokémon game allows you to leave two Pokémon to be taken care of. If the two Pokémon are opposite genders and are of compatible forms, then there is a chance that they will produce a Pokémon Egg.
So many players use the Day Care Center for the sole purpose of hatching Pokémon through selective breeding.
