On the flip side of things there is the possibility that each of these parts of the mind are, in and of themselves, different universes, each with their own cast of characters with their own minds, which, in turn, could be like different universes with their own populations which have minds, which... well, you get the point.
If we are merely extensions of someone else's consciousness, then I have a theory. Reality as we see it could be a ruse, and when we dream, we are actually awake. Our "real" selves could merely be mental extensions of our "dream" selves, and the dream is the true reality! At lest, that's potentially what I think, if I'm actually thinking and everything around me is not a mere figment of my imagination (or have receded so far into my own mind that I am physically in a coma and this is all just an inner world that I've created for myself...). Ooh... Maybe I watched too much of The Twilight Zone as a kid; twisted my mind a bit. If that was actually real, and not just all in my mind. Hmmm...
It's especially bizarre when you realize that everyone else has entertained that exact same "I'm the only person who actually exists" theory.
It's pretty funny, the idea that trillions of years of evolution ultimately led to something that wonders whether everything around it actually exists.
It's always weird, going on philosophical tangents, because you know you're pretty much traversing a path that's already existed for a very long time.

Actually, on a slightly different tangent, albeit a physical one this time, one of the prevailing theories of quantum physics is the Many Worlds Interpretation, wherein is the principle of quantum decoherence. This gives the appearance of there being only one universe: this one. In the reality of this theory, though, it is implied that each event, no matter the scale, cause diverging timelines, and therefore, universes to form. In some sections of this multiverse, we may, in fact, exist as we think we know, but in others, we may exist differently (or not at all!). Some minds may be tuned in to the potential reality of other universes more than others, possibly giving us the feeling of wondering whether we exist or not, while in multiversal reality, both answers... and more... are true!
Being an extension of someone else's consciousness basically means that you are that person, who wants to try out being someone else.
By acknowledging that you're an extension, you're acknowledging that you're actually being multiple people at the same time.
Kinda like a video game, where you're both the person holding the controller, and the one on the screen.
