This is a piece form my "long torso era" showing Rosemary relaxing in one of the gardens in the palace of Andur. She is part of the group referred to as the "Moderns", and is enjoying an area usually reserved for females only.
The main thing I wanted to try in this piece was creating the ornate borders that decorate many objects from that region of Northeast Africa in the 14th century. It took some trial and error to figure out how to get the borders the way I wanted them, but in the end they turned out alright. I've
since gotten better at my backgrounds and my understanding of foliage has improved. Image size 16"x 12". Medium color pencil, gouache with some marker and micron pen.

I’ve always felt this struck a lovely balance. It’s very clear she’s wearing almost nothing—just some jewelry and a not-quite-thong—and is completely unselfconscious about it. Attractive and enticing, yet understated and relaxed: no demands, simply pleasure and enjoyment, both hers and the viewer’s.
