Yeah, both of them get banged up over the course of the first film. Toothless is missing a tail fin and Hiccup gets a peg leg. Neither of them are slowed down for long. :)
The first movie in particular is really excellent and I browbeat everyone I know into watching it at least once. The sequel was fun, too, but it didn't have the impact on me that the first one did.
