Night’s Birthday Bash
Written by Bradley H
Dedicated to Night
The big day had finally arrived. Sun streaks crept through the cracks in the barn door, falling softly and silently on the dirt and hay below. The streaks made their way across the floor to a particular stable door, at which point they crept it again, falling across the eyes of a particularly large stallion. The stallion grumbled as the light flickered across his closed eye lids, and he slowly began to wake. He blinked several times and covered his eyes from the light, licking his sizable lips, getting rid of the taste of sleep. He shifted, threw his legs out of bed and sat in a slight slouch, his back bent a bit as he rested his arms on his knees.
Night didn’t like mornings all that much, but today was a special day. His ears perked and his eyes widen suddenly as he remembered today was his birthday. He was turning 19 years old today, and he shot up out of bed with a grin on his face, stretching his strong arms up over his head. His ear twisted as he heard something at his stable door.
“Hey, morning Night! Just came by to say hap…” the voice of Bradley, a very large Percheron draft horse, drifted in towards Night’s door and stopped suddenly. He had forgotten that Night typically slept in the nude and had just happened upon the Clydesdale/Zebra mix with his back turned towards him, his firm backside in full view. Both stallions stared at one another for a second before they both blushed, and Bradley quickly covered his eyes, letting out an embarrassed giggle.
“Sorry mate! I forgot you were indecent in the mornings!” he apologized as Night grumbled a bit. Night quickly found a pair of boxers and threw them on.
“Alright, you can look now,” Night chuckled, sticking out his tongue. Bradley uncovered his eyes as Night met him at the stable door, his arm leaning up against it.
“Anyway, just came by to wish you a happy birthday!” stated Bradley happily, a big smile on his stout face. He was a wee bit sweaty, which was normal, since he had been working in the fields all morning. Night smiled back and gave him a friendly smack on the arm.
“Hey, thanks man!” Night said with a grin, “Say, you and Frison haven’t planned anything, have you?”
Bradley chuckled and blushed a little, but he shook his head. “No, no! Of course not, we know how much you hate surprise birthday parties.” Bradley was a bad liar. He gave an awkward smile as Night studied him.
“Alright, if you say so,” Night chuckled. He left the stable door and went over to his dresser, pulling out his clothes for the day. Bradley bid him a farewell for now as he had to get back out into the fields to work.
Night pulled out his favorite pair of worn jeans and a simple, comfortable football shirt and slipped them all on. He did a small take in his mirror, flexing one of his arms and smiled to himself. Soon after he pulled out his favorite breakfast cereal and sat down to eat. Just then his brother Frison came to his door with a happy grin on his equine muzzle.
“Hey bro!” yelled Frison, waving to his friend. Night sat up and jogged a little to his door and gave his friend a tight hug, both horses exchanging friendly nuzzles over the gate.
“Happy birthday, bro!” said Frison with a smile, patting his brother on the shoulder.
“Thanks bro, that means a lot,” said Night, returning the smile. Night invited his friend into his stable for some cereal, and Frison nodded, smiling. Both horses sat heavily on Night’s couch, watching the tube.
After some time of watching television, and making fun of whatever show they were watching, Night planted his hands on his knees and stood up, stretching and yawning some. Frison chuckled and got up as well, patting his brother on the back.
“So, bro, what do you want to do for your birthday?” Frison asked, leaning in towards his friend, his hand on his shoulder.
Night shrugged and twisted his lip, trying to think. “Well, we could always go out I guess,” Night answered, chuckling a little.
Frison nodded in agreement. “Where do you want to go?”
Night turned to his friend and smiled. “How about that new restaurant that just opened up? Its fairly near here, isn’t it?” Frison nodded again, his ears perking a bit.
“That’s a great idea! How about we go tonight for dinner? That’ll give us some time to prepare,” asked Frison. Night nodded in agreement and gently hugged his friend’s side.
Frison patted Night’s back and stepped away a bit, opening the stable door, Night following behind him. The two stallions walked along the stables, other horses in their stables, at least the horses that were awake, waving to Night and wishing him a happy birthday. A few offered themselves as Night’s present, but he declined with a blush and a wave. Besides, his heart belonged elsewhere…
The two horses walked out of the stables and out into the sun, the warm mid-day sun beaming down upon them, warming their fur. Night stretched out his arms and let the sun warm him as Frison walked along side him, gently cracking his neck a bit. The pair trotted their way off to a distant field where they found Bradley hard at work, the big grey Percheron hooked up in his plowing harness. Bradley noticed the pair coming over the hill and he smiled, waving to them as he unhooked himself. He met Night and Frison at the fence gate.
“Hey you two, what’re you doing here?” Bradley stated with a soft smile, his body and forelocks dripping with sweat. The Percheron just seemed big compared to the two other horses, but then again he was a little big and round for his breed. But, the bigger the horse, the bigger the heart, as his pal Frison would say.
“Just coming to visit, and to invite you out to my birthday dinner tonight,” Night answer with a big grin.
Bradley smiled and nodded. “Sure! I’ll be there. I’ll get this field done and I’ll meet up with you two at the stables. Does that sound good?”
The two horses nodded and gave the grey horse a friendly slap on the arm. When Bradley turned back the two horses shook their hands and winced. They didn’t know their bro’s arms felt like bricks.

Night time rolled in quickly, but tonight was a night to celebrate. The trio of horses arrived at the Bistro Vecori, a new Italian restaurant that had opened near them recently. They were having a grand opening special, so the prices would be nice.
Frison’s Honda stretched to a halt in the parking lot, the tan stallion exiting first, followed by Night. The back of the car seemed weighted down, and the reason why was revealed soon after as Bradley emerged from the back, the car’s suspension bouncing back up from the weight of the Percheron. Frison and Night chuckled and looked at their friend.
“What? I can’t help it. I’m a big boy,” Bradley laughed and blushed, tapping his tubby belly.
The trio of horses entered the restaurant and was greeted by a friendly vixen waitress.
“Table for three, please,” requested Frison.
“Right this way please,” answered the vixen with a social smile. The stallions were seated in a nice, secluded corner table, somewhat away from the rest of the guests. A dim chandelier hung just above the checkered cloth table, setting a friendly, intimate atmosphere. The horses took their seats and received their menus.
“So what do you think you’ll have?”
“Oh I don’t know…”
“The spaghetti’s always nice.”
“Yeah, but I had spaghetti the other day. I want something else.”
“How about the Parmesan Rigatoni Chicken Alfredo Panini?”
“I don’t think I can ever pronounce all of that!”
“Well, would anyone be opposed to a big pizza for the three of us?”
“Actually, that sounds really good! Let’s go for it!”
The extra large, double cheese, double pepperoni, double green peppers pizza didn’t stand a chance against the voracious appetite of the three horses. Bradley leaned back in his chair, his jeans button undone, his belly showing a bit.
“That hit the spot!” stated the stuffed horse happily.
“Sure was!” agreed Frison, a contented smile on his muzzle. Night simply smiled and licked his horsey lips clean. As the waitress walked by Frison called to her and brought her to the table. He whispered something in her ear and she nodded and giggled some. Night looked slightly perplexed, but Bradley just grinned. Soon after three waiters came to the table, one holding a big birthday cake with “Happy Birthday Night!” written in golden letters across the vanilla cake.
“Oh thank you guys! Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Night said excitedly, looking over the big cake. Frison and Bradley just smiled and in tandem said “You’re welcome.” The cake was cut by Night, taking the biggest piece out of the cake. He first offered it to Frison, and then to Bradley, who both declined.
“It’s your birthday; you should have the biggest piece!” said Bradley with a grin, patting the Clydesdale’s back. Frison nodded, agreeing with Brad, and they all took their own portions before chowing down. Before the cake was finished, Bradley pulled out his camera and waved to Frison to move in with Night. They smiled and Bradley clicked the camera. Night then finished off the final piece of cake.

It was late now, well passed midnight. Frison’s car stopped in front of the stables that the three horses called home. Bradley scratched his mane and big them all a good night. He preferred to sleep out under the stars, and he headed off to his favorite field. Frison and Night went back into the barn. After giving each a big hug and a nuzzle to the cheek, the two horses parted ways; Frison returned to his stable, his arctic fox waiting for him, and Night went to his stable.
Night stripped down to his birthday suit, which was oddly appropriately, and he smiled to himself, lying back on his soft warm bed. He cupped his hands behind his head and stared up at the ceiling. He thought of his day, his friends, and the fact that he was now 19 years old.
