Well, it isn't really an opposites theme. It is my very geeky way to symbolize my anniversary with my boyfriend. As you go to higher and lower latitudes, the duration of nighttime and daytime change depending on Earth's position on its orbit (which is why seasons happen). Near the poles, a day lasts effectively six months and night lasts just as much (though many of these months are not _completely_ dark).
The background does not represent "opposites" but rather, a sequence of six months of daytime and six months of nighttime that add up to a year, happening in the Antarctic. All compressed into one image.
Also, how is a husky opposite to an arctic fox? They both come from very similar locations, both live in very cold climates, are canines... :P
