I had planned to release this 2 days earlier, but with Nintendo's awesome E3 announcements over the last 2 days, as well as a bunch of school work with the term closing I was left with little time to write even this short conclusion to the introduction. All in all though I'm happy with how this turned out, and am now looking forward to moving on to the actual story.
With that being said, because of the longer length I plan for the chapters to be, as well as the work load pushed on us with the school term closing, I will probably not be able to finish the first chapter until at least another week. Things look a lot better after that with the summer presenting much free time for writing, but that is something for a future date. For now, I hope you'll enjoy this end to the beginning, as always I appreciate you taking the time to read this and finally please leave comments below for any relevant issues in need of addressing. Until next time!
Peak readjusted himself on the ground, trying not to disturb the sleeping form of Desdemona leaning up against him. The walk through the territory today was especially hard for Peak, and near the end his extra weight dragged him down with every step. He was thankful when the party finally announced that they were to stop for the night and even more thankful when he learned that he had not been chosen for guard duty, meaning he’d have a full night sleep for the expedition tomorrow. Leaning back, Peak felt his eyelids droop, watching the Chimchar on guard duty tend to the fire...
He sat up with a jolt sometime later. He felt Desdemona leaving his side, and now watched as she walked up to the fire. Peak yawned, trying to remember if she was on guard duty.
But instead of relieving the Chimchar of his position, Desdemona had continued to walk on. All sleep fled from Peak’s mind. The Chimchar guard had not or refused to acknowledge her presence as she walked past him, past the fire directly into the deep forest surrounding them. What was going on?
“Des. Des!” Peak shout-whispered, following her figure into the forest. There was no explanation to her wanderings away from the group this late in the night, so what did it mean? Suddenly Peak tripped and fell over a stray root, landing ungracefully with a thud on the hard forest floor. He picked himself up grumbling. He had lost track of Desdemona, and was now alone in the dark forest. Whatever she was doing, he hoped she knew what she was getting in to. But just as Peak turned around towards the camp, he suddenly did a double take.
What was it that he had seen in the corner of his eye? Was it a Pokémon? Peak felt his heart pumping faster. He started jogging back to camp, the air starting to feel thick around him. Starting to cough, Peak realized the air around him had indeed changed, carrying a thick, pungent scent. Now stopping, he fanned the air in front of his mouth trying to desperately get a breath of fresh air, feeling his lungs burn from the toxins that filled the air. Yet the gas around him only seemed to grow thicker, and as he desperately gasped for any fresh air he felt himself falling, falling...
Rolling out of bed, Peak landed on the ground with a tremendous thud that seemed to shake the entire house. Moaning softly, his senses slowly adjusted to his surroundings around him as he tried to shake off the recurring dream. He yawned loudly, only to suddenly sense the same smell as the one in his dream. He was instantly jolted awake, and sat up to see that a thick purple haze was covering his room. “CHI!” He shouted.
Peak grasped on to his bedside and pulled himself up, only to be brought back down to his knees, racked by coughs. At standing level the poisonous gas was at its most thick, while near the floor it was nowhere near as concentrated. Crawling along, Peak made his way from the bedroom to the stairs. Chi’s bedroom was the only room on the second floor.
Peak filled his lungs with as much clean air as he could before charging upstairs, the stairs creaking ominously under his weight crashing down on them. At the top, he threw himself on the ground taking in deep breaths only to find that the air up here was much worse than downstairs. Thinking of Chi’s small body breathing in these fumes, Peak charged down the hall and threw himself at the door at the end.
Plumes of smoke danced around the mess that was Chi’s room. Various fires and broken furniture dotted the room. Chi was nowhere to be found, but across Chi’s bed the window was broken open and fresh air fueled fires raging on around it. Peak quickly formulated that a Fire and Poison Pokémon had broken in and attacked Chi. But why? And where are they now?
With a moaning sound, the ceiling above Chi’s bed collapsed down with a shower of sparks. Peak raised his arms to protect his face. Chi was not here, and the fire had appeared to start to spread to the house’s infrastructure. Peak needed to get out of the house, fast.
His doughy feet carrying Peak as best they could, Peak hurried out of the room and down the stairs. But as he grabbed the handrail to swing himself around to the stairs, it snapped off under his weight causing him to lose balance and stumble heavily down the stairs.
Stars swam in front of Peak’s eyes. Clenching onto the handrail at the bottom of the stairs, Peak tried to pull himself up only for a white flashing pain to shoot through his arm. Trying to take a deep breath to steady himself, Peak started coughing again. The spreading fire had made the air even more polluted then before, and white lights started to flash in front of Peak’s eyes as he rasped desperately, trying to take in a breath.
A few minutes passed as Peak heard more of the ceiling start to collapse in. The villagers may have taken notice of the fire by now, but there was no way they would be able to put it out fast enough to save Peak. They would not know of the evidence of a struggle in Chi’s room and assume that it was some accident that cost them both their lives. But Chi wasn’t dead wasn’t she? Peak had seen signs of a struggle, checked the whole house and she was nowhere to be found. By someone, for some reason Chi must have been taken, and with Peak’s death no one would know the wiser.
With those thoughts, a shot of energy coursed through Peak. Ignoring the immense pain in his arms, Peak rolled over and pulled himself up. The spreading fires had draped the living room in a thick black haze, and Peak stumbled blindly through it. Groping at the walls, Peak finally found the door handle in the collapsing building that had previously been his home. With a last burst of energy, Peak threw himself at the door and went flying through into the cool night air.
Taking in deep breaths Peak lay on the cool grass in front of his house. He felt a sob start to rise in his throat. Peak had promised to keep Chi safe all these years, only ever leaving her side when he had went out with the Survival Party to build a new life for them both. But now Chi was separated from him now, in the company of Pokémon that Peak realized had wanted him dead and Chi taken captive.
“CHI!” Peak shouted. “CHI!!!”
The various town Pokémon found him lying unconscious on his front lawn shortly after, as they battled the inferno that raged on through Peak and Chi’s house.
