A valid excuse for a superior officer to spare herself the shame of showing weakness in the line of duty. She was not strong enough to answer Victus just now, not when everything could be so easily squandered again.

There, on the other side of that valley and through the other side of that portal, they would march into a besieged city on a hopeless, nigh-pointless, mission. They were disposable. Dispossessed. And here at the helm, responsible for their lives as she leads the charge, is a scrawny scrapper's legionnaire if there ever was one: Imga Ironcog. Frumpy, fraying, forsaken.

Her sniper's voice was distant, grizzled words intoned without inflection.
