Between classes and work I havent had much time at all to work on new characters. I needed something to put in a portfolio, so I rendered this. Hooray for vague threats of violence against potential employers! (Thats a comically oversized meat cleaver behind his back if you cant make it out)
I tried to fix the common problem of CG fur where it looks too uniform in length. I added a separate group to act as stray hairs, so that they break up the outline of the character a bit and give a little more random look. I think I got it to look right, but the problem is trying to get the right balance of the frizzy, messy look, and the flat uniform outline. And there are some other improvements since the last render. One of these days Ill do a video tutorial on how to use Shave and a haircut in Maya. If i ever have time.

hmm.. Ive been looking at it for hours so after a while anything looks good. I think the length is OK on the stray hairs in this version of the render, But, another issue is that the character was rendered on a black background. So, with the alpha map applied you still get some of that black around the edges and it makes hairs look thicker and more pronounced.
With that in mind though, if you say its too much it probably is, so ive updated the shot with the edges of the hair toned down a bit. If it were rendered against a 3d background this wouldnt be a problem at all, But when you start compositiing characters into photoshop, you start getting alpha issues.

I'd noticed the border alpha artifacts, figured it had been from something like that. You're fix definitely looks better (Firefox caching for reference FTW), but its the fact that there are so many stray longer hairs on top of the fact they're so much longer that makes it feel scraggly to me.
On a related note, though I didn't notice it the first time, you have a border on the cleaver as well. Just thought you'd like to have yet another thing to worry about ;)
Though more seriously, the cleaver feels like it is floating behind him and not really there. I think its the lack of shadow from him on it (I'm guessing you composited it in afterwards?). And if my guess is right, then you should probably try to fix that because it stands out to me.
Just my two cents though.

Right now, actually nothing. I'm too busy with school, however, I make it a point to add at least one good piece of work every month or so. Kibble was originally supposed to be an animation character, But since I don't have time to make a whole character at the moment, I modified him a bit to work well as a still (Stuff like making sure the fur has more coverage and looks softer, facial expression, also giving him a bit of character. eg; the maniacal grin and cleaver)
