yeah... I dont think its fair limiting the tiger species to... a cat who does not even look like a tiger.. and what appears to be a sabre-tooth legendary dont really count...
they need to just make a pokemon that is clearly a tiger without any question the shiny version of it could be white XD

The thing about Purgly being the "tiger cat" pokemon is technically a translation error. In the Japanese version, it's called "the tabby pokemon." However, the Japanese word for "tabby" is literally "tiger cat," something that the person who did the English translations was likely unaware of.
But seriously, it's always good to find someone else that understands that there are actually very few (if any) pokemon that are based on anything that's even close to a wolf. Houndour and Houndoom are Doberman-hellhounds, the Eevee family are some weird mix of cat and fox, Archanine is based on Chinese guardian lions (AKA "foo dogs"), Lucario is based on the Egyptian jackal-god Anubis, Absol is a more pessimistic interpretation of the legendary Bai-Ze (which being half-lion and half-cow makes me personally believe it should be classified as a Mesonychid), and Suicune is the dangged Kirin. If any pokemon could be called a wolf, it would be the Manectric line, as they are based on the wolf-like interpretation of the Raijou, as opposed to the tiger-like interpretation represented by Raikou. However, I do agree with the logic of the earlier statement that Manectric would be closer to a maned wolf rather than a grey wolf.

You are thinking Canid or caniform. Canine comes from the latin, canis which means dog. Yes wolves are canines in that they are the greater classification of dogs. Lupines are wolves. Canines are dogs. Vulpines are foxes. And coyotes are American wild dogs. Canid includes Dogs, wolves, coyotes, foxes, etc. Canine is a term which typically refers to dogs (of, relating to, or resembling a dog or dogs--definition according to google). Canine can refer to other caniforms but is typically used to refer to C. lupus familiaris and other dog-like subsecies of wolf.
hehe for a second I thought you where talking about him

XD but yeah maybe it is a wolf? I would like to think there is at least one

if is a wolf it would be the false wolf called the mane wolf or C. brachyurus its not really a wolf because the mane wolf is its own species and cant breed with other wolves only another mane wolf. So the false wolf XD
its suppose to be a lion in japan (livolt) = lion volt
its sub-form kinda implys Electrike is a lion cub with dog like traits as well.
so it might be the closest thing we got even if its based off the false wolf XD

Its appearance may also be based on a brown hyena. Mightyena's appearance as well as the fact that it is a pack animal is reminiscent of a spotted hyena.
Name origin
Mightyena may be a combination of mighty and hyena.
Guraena may be a combination of growl and hyena.
there is no proof its a wolf it really does look like a brown hyena
pokedex entry : The Bite Pokémon
It chases down prey in a pack of around ten. They defeat foes with perfectly coordinated teamwork.
even if it was not a hyena it would be more based on a German Shepherd because it will always obey the commands of a skilled Trainer.
only in Mandarin Chinese does it ever state its a wolf all the other countries say it is a hyena.
if we take mightyena and make it a wolf then why is there no hyena pokemon? we got lion pokemon

Are you kidding? It looks like a wolf and nothing like a hyena; the muzzle, jaw, tail and body construction are all distinctly Wolf-like - It is also maned and thickly furred for a cold climate. Mightyena is freaking black and grey - where are you getting brown from?
The fact that it's got 'Yena' in the name, is because Pokemon is translated by idiots, most translated Pokemon names are idiotic if not outright wrong.
That it's a pack animal that is loyal when 'tamed' is a Wolf attribute, certainly not a Hyena attribute.
There is no Hyena Pokemon because there is no Hyena Pokemon yet, just as there isn't a Capybara, Cheetah or Ibex. They haven't gotten around to it yet - and it should be no surprise that since there has not yet been a Pokemon game set in Africa, just Japan, North America and Europe, that we haven't seen the full range of African Pokemon. Since there's not a huge African market, we probably never will and should be grateful to the Safari Zone for the peek that it gave us. One that did not include Mightyena.

they are based off irl animals they dont have to match their colors 100% pikachu is a yellow mouse ^^; mice come in many colors but yellow is not one of them.
Sir John Barrow, described how hyenas in Sneeuberge were trained to hunt game, writing that they were "as faithful and diligent as any of the common domestic dogs."
hyena can be tamed even ancient Egyptians did just that.
When raised with a firm hand, they may eventually become affectionate and as amenable as well trained dogs.
Hoenn is kinda based on jungle wild life just a bit. Tropius is proof that its a tropical place as well as Slakoth. However its not Africa, there is lots of pokemon scattered around the pokemon world that exist where they should not irl
take zebstrika, unova is based kinda off of America (around new york) yet they have no zebra in the wild so why does zebstrika live there?
the games and real life dont mix, pokemon does not care about making new creatures they have a team of random people who draw up the pokemon then decide on the ones they like and use them in game. Cause of this the pokemon are getting random where they live at and the less chance their team will draw up a capybara, cheetah, or ibex they rather draw up more foxes cause japan likes the fox.
mightyena might be both a wolf and a hyena there is nothing saying it cant be both, hyena and wolves by description of can be tamed and bite, hunt in packs... is not much to go off of cause they both can do that. Most pokemon we dont know what they are we are just assuming they are what they are. gamefreak just says here you go make of it what you will. Other times pokemon are clear images of what they are suppose to be.
I mean does Kangaskhan or berloom look like a kangaroo to you? Gamefreak says they are suppose to be. I mean kangaskhan has a pouch and berloom is kangroo like but I dont see them has kangaroo I see kangaskhan and a berloom totally different creatures.
Braviary is totally an eagle right?, the game never says it is. It just says it can pick up a whole car and fly with it and about how its protective of its friends.
There never will be a wolf unless the species of the pokemon says it is the wolf pokemon. Mightyena might be wolf like but its the bite pokemon. Also did you know when naming a few kinds of hyena they mistook them for wolves. The Aardwolf is proof of that.
as for the Safari Zone that existed long before hoenn in red and blue, it was the only way to get chansey besides Cerulean Cave. Its just suppose to be a fun thing for people to get rare pokemon which was later on removed for the pal park. Then now in x and y the Friend Safari which lets you get rare pokemon that have a chance to have their dream world ability.
Safari just means an expedition to observe or hunt animals in their natural habitat.

yep but still no pokemon that says its the wolf pokemon
or cheetah
^^; pokemon does not really focus on what they dont have they just draw up random stuff then decided where they should add them.
they make the pokemon look like irl animals but most of the time gamefreak says make of it what you will buts its a new creature.
so if you want to say a pokemon is a wolf go ahead XD

mighty... hyena
its actually a brown hyena colored black and grey
Manectric might be the only wolf pokemon as its similar to the mane wolf... however it could also be a lion as the japanese name is Livolt, lion volt. maybe a lion gator wolf?
I think only in Mandarin Chinese is mightyena classed as a wolf but its name is big wolf dog implying its a dog mix like Arcanine.
a wolf pokemon might look like this

x'3 I dunno about absol being a goat, those claws are rather sharp.
Though then again there was the whole Yingyang design they were going for, and the scythe suppose to play into the whole doombringer persona since he much like a vulture is around when something horrible is about to happen.
