Lady Prisma... of the house Chromaas. A contender for the throne that none saw coming. With her astounding swordsmanship and labyrinthine intellect, she saw through all deception and.... oh wait, she's a woman in the GoT world. Never mind. She was just raped a lot, and gets her power through pure luck, and through the actions of more competent males, like all the other female characters. ... Did I mention that GRRM claims to be a feminist?

Have you... ever actually SEEN or READ Game of Thrones? Don't want to argue here, just curious and want to debate the point if you'd allow me. Perhaps you know more than me, I've only seen/read about a book and a half, but none of what you've said really applies to most of the current female cast - perhaps later along, I don't know. Still, I can throw a bunch of examples out;
Catelyn Stark - Matriarch of the Stark household. Took matters into her own hands when her family was attacked, seeking out who she believed to be behind the plot of the assassination of her son and approaching him in person to have him seized and taken to trial. Has been a significant figure in guiding and helping her family despite her husbands death, and generally is the one Stark most of the others go to for advice. Has helped the war significantly through diplomatic skill when approaching allies and enemies alike.
Arya Stark - A tomboyish girl, who has been trained by one of the greatest swordsmen in the country. Despite her age has been shown to hold her own in a fight and is entirely capable of protecting herself. Whilst she has recieved protection from other characters due to her age, she's shown to be entirely capable herself. She's one of the few characters to've been able to face death directly numerous times and be strong enough to carry on.
Cersei Lannister - I put this example forward at great risk, as it could be argued she gained power from marrying the King - at the same time, it could also be said that the King only gained power through marriage to her. Since the King's death, despite no longer being the Queen she has practically ruled the country. She's smart, manipulative, and capable of controlling the world from behind. She has been in an abusive relationship, yes. However she's also fought through that, manipulated matters to her own goals and is generally one of the most powerful characters in the series through mere force of will. She could plausibly be argued to be the main villain, and yet we can still sympathise with her and see the world through her view.
Daenarys Targaryen - Only character I'm listing who I am aware of being raped in some manner - at the same time she's by far one of the most - if not THE most - powerful character in the series currently. She exists in a culture where men generally are considered above women... yet has become a leader herself, has a loyal following and a small swarm of dragons at her bidding. She's believed to be able to unite the hordes of barbarians in the East under her power as a single entity through pure force of will. Whilst at first it could be said she gained initial power through her husband, upon his death she has seized power and not allowed her position to be taken from her by a man in a barbaric male-dominated society. Many people have tried to have her killed due to the threat she poses - she's still going.
Brienne of Tarth - Not been around long, so I can't say too much on her, but I can say she's already one of my new favourite characters. Standing about a head taller than most male characters of the series, she's large and powerful, and very willing to prove it. You're introduced to her as she wins a tournament against Loras Tyrell - a character previously established as being one of the greatest fighters in the series. Despite being disarmed, she overpowers him and proves herself as a warrior. She's appointed as a member of Renly's personal Kingsguard. Whilst brutishly powerful, she's also smart and fair - a stoic woman who it's impossible not to respect in some way.
Now, I won't argue the point that a lot of horrible things have happened to the women in the world... however a lot horrible has happened to the men too. It's not a happy series, and whilst there is inherent sexism in the world, the majority of actual female characters tend to be subversions of the matter, proving power and independence despite that setting and world around them.
