An armful of flowers tucked in the crook of his arm, René Vulpes strode up to the hospital door the nurse at the desk had directed him to and knocked on the door. “Are you decent?” He called, tongue-in-cheek as he entered.
Faith rolled her eyes as she lay in bed, her cast-covered leg help up. “You're one to talk René.”She pointed out. René chose to not acknowledge the hit and merely offered her a handful of flowers. “Awww, thank you!” Faith smiled as she smelled the flowers. “It really brightens things up around here. Could you put these in some water please?” She nodded towards a vase on the other side of the room. René obliged.
He looked around before finally looking at Faith's new cast. “Hmm, I see Pike was already here.” He observed, seeing his new message on the cast. “May I?”
“Sure!” Faith fidgeted as she tried to sit up a little straighter as René signed her new cast. “What're you writing?”
“I'm writing,” René said: “To the sweet girl with the biggest cast—and biggest bloomers—I've ever seen!”
Faith's white face flushed redder than his own. “René!” She moaned. “I TOLD you, those bloomers are a secret!”
“Relax, relax—I'm wishing you the best and reminding everyone how cute you are—as if they could forget.” René snerked. “I just love giving you a hard time about those bloomers.”
Her reply was to cross her arms and stick out her tongue at him. “Says the vulpix with more kinds of underwear than he has tails!”
“Sure, sure, that's your answer for everything!” René rolled his eyes as he sat at the foot of her bed. “So how long are you gonna be stuck here?”
“Another day or two of 'observation.'” Faith groaned. “They won't even let me get up out of bed! I tried sneaking out earlier but Pike stopped me.”
René snorted with mock-indignation. “The cad!” Faith cocked her head as she saw that René still had a not-inconsiderable amount of flowers in his arms.
“I thought you put those in water...” She wondered. René shuffled a little uncomfortably.
He explained. “I did...these are...these are for my mom.”
Faith covered her mouth. “Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't know she was in a hospital! Is she all right?” René's expression was answer enough.
“Mom's been in a coma for several years....” He mumbled as he half-turned away.
“I'm so sorry.” Faith whispered. Rene turned back around with a grateful smile.
“So do you want to go for a little stroll to meet mom?” René offered. “I'm sure she'd love you”
The girl sat up slowly in the bed, a smile there. “Well... I'd love to... if they hadn't taken my crutches away...” She laughed nervously as usual, indicating of course to the casted leg on display atop the covers and pillows.
René frowned, then he noticed a wheelchair out in the hall. “Will that do?” She blinked and looked herself, grinning, as she pulled back the covers herself.
“As long as you don't mind pushing?”
René shook his head and popped out and back in with the chair. “Your chariot awaits m'lady...” He bowed with a flourish.
Faith couldn't help giggling slightly, as she took her time, struggling a little to pluck up the leg from where they'd propped it up so high, but managing, shuffling over to the edge of the bed, and hopping forward to the chair. “Why, thank you, kind Miss!” She returned grandly, earning a beaming smile from being called 'miss' and he starts wheeling Faith out and up to his mom's floor. He pushed her to the elevator and pushed the button for her floor.
As they started going up he turned and asked: “So, you okay?”
She giggled, nodding slowly, the casted leg still propped up on the chair now, as she tugged the hem of her gown, making sure she was covered up enough. “Asides being kept indoors all day, I'm fine: there's not much training I can do in a hospital bed.”
“On the other hand, you gotta love the fashion sense.” He teased. Faith stuck out her tongue lightly to the other Vulpix
“I couldn't even fit my normal underwear on under these...” She pouted.
“It's a miracle anything can fit over those ginormous bloomers...” René observed.
Faith's flush suddenly burst to life, and she subconsciously covered herself with her arms there. “...They're not that big...” She mumbled slowly in a small voice. René snorted and rubbed her head.
“Just what ARE you wearing under that thing anyway?”
Faith coughed lightly, turning her head, even as she found it hard not to enjoy the rub she normally received there. “Well... I'll keep that one a secret today...” René shrugged.
“So long as your decent when you meet mom.”
The girl didn't respond with anything to carry the back and forths, instead, she just blinked, and looked back to René, a thought that hadn't occurred to her to ask until then... “...So, why is your mother here, René?”
René winced at the bluntness of the question, though he had been expecting it, but tried to cover it with a shrug. “Well....when I was seven she was in an accident and she--hasn't woken up.” He replied tersely.
Faith blinked taking a moment to try and absorb the sudden bluntness, and seemingly callousness of his description... as she spoke slowly, echoing him as if unable to rationalise it... “She hasn't woken up...?”
He shook his head, his eyes watering up. “No.” It came out a croak so he coughed and said again, quietly “No...”
She kept silent and said nothing, turning forward again she decided for the moment, she would keep quiet, until she could see for herself as she only reached back... and gripped one of the paws he held on her wheelchair giving him just a small squeeze of reassurance.
René nodded gratefully as he wiped his face with his sleeve. “Thanks.” The elevator came to a stop with a ping as they arrived on their floor. “Here we are.”
Faith took a deep breath, and nodded, readying herself for whatever she was about to see. René rolled her into a large, expensive looking hospital room. It was closed off for use for a single occupant. René's mom, despite been in a coma for almost a decade, still looked radiant. She might have simply been asleep. Aside from a single IV-line to provide sustenance, she looked completely peaceful.
Vera was surrounded with flowers and cards and momentos sent by friends, fans, but mostly René; including gifts for the last nine mothers day and major holidays. René smiled a touch sadly as he walked over to fluff her pillow and kiss her on the cheek. “Hi mom...I've brought someone to meet you. This is Faith.”
She kept herself silent. She simply sat there, unsure what to do in this situation as she was brought inside the room and looked to the peaceful figure now in bed; and the gifts flourished around her. This woman, René's mother as she could only halfway smile to him, sitting there, looking from her lower angle to the Ninetales in the bed, unsure what to say at first, but finally, settling on René's talking to her; she bowed lightly, as always, to the womon. “Hello, Mrs Vulpes...Faith Sumisu...of the Sumisu shrine...” She stopped herself short of 'a pleasure to meet you...' She wished it could have been.
Faith sat properly again, however, as she looked to René, her half-smile still holding on. “..And you've still came to see her, all this time?”
René nodded gratefully as he patted Faith's back. “Thank you for being so kind...I know this is awkward for you.” He paused before answering her question. “I see her once a week, and on mother's day, christmas, new years, my birthday, her birthday, the anniversary of the accident...” He trailed off.
Faith again took hold of his paw as he patted her, looking to the row of presents...nine birthdays...nine mother's days...nine years...and she noted; none from her husband but said nothing. “Nine years...” She said softly.
“Yeah....” René sighed. “Nine years...I miss her SO much....” He looked down. Faith held his paw there, the only part she could hold from this angle, and looked to the womon who had been robbed of her life; yet hung there, still clinging on, her radiance and beauty still fighting on. “I can't even imagine how tough it must be for you...”
René sniffed gratefully but said nothing He just wiped his eyes with his sleeve. “Thanks...”
The girl looked on watching the woman, wondering with a morbid shudder...she had a thought but... she had to know first even if it pained her to ask René: “What accident happened, exactly?”
René licked his lips and fidgeted uncomfortably. “She was driving home one night and she got slammed into by a driver at a crossection who'se breaks didn't work.”
Faith thought, slowly putting the idea through her mind; it must have been such a sudden incident that maybe...“What do the Doctors say...?” She asked, slowly, concerned.
“They say that she can live off life-support and is breathing on her own but the higher-functions just aren't...you get the idea.” He looked away.
Faith felt a lump in her thorat; something she worried he might say as she nodded slowly, eyes closed, letting him go without saying it. She took a moment, smiling slowly to him. “...If I know one thing, René... I bet she's proud of you at least...”
René bit his lip as it started trembling. “Y-you really think so?” Faith nodded, slowly, trying to adjust herself, at least enough to look to him properly.
“René...you're in the Academy...a head of your own team of friends, and probably a few times stronger than I'll ever be—And more than that, you're yourself. I know she will be proud.”
His shoulders start shaking as René started to break down crying into Faith's shoulder. “Thank you Faith...”
She hugged him close rubbing his back slowly there, but took her time, letting him hold there, for a few moments, before finally, she decided “...René?”
He sniffed. “...Yes?”
“Sorry to ask...” She began slowly “...But, is it okay if you could get me something to drink...? There was a vending machine back near the lobby I saw...and...” She slowly trailed off.
René nodded. “Of-of course.” He hiccuped. “I'll--I'll just be a minute, that all right?”
“That's fine... She smiled slightly, nodding to him with a final pat, sitting back as he headed out. And that left the girl alone. She took a moment, and bit her lip; making sure the doors were closed before she looked to the bed. “Sorry, René... “ She slowly let loose beneath her breath.
She reached under her gown...into her bra, before she extracted the only thing that had been padding them up, and her chest seemed to vanish at once: her gloves!
Slowly, dutifully, she slid them on, making sure to pull them tight, checking the glinting blue gems...she'd only just managed to hide them from the staff thus far, her only method of training, as she looked to the bed once more... and placed her arms on the chair, taking a deep breath!
Faith bit her lip, rising up slowly on her good leg...not helping her that the chair didn't want to sit still with her standing up...wincing as the new heavy cast overweighed her balance...but finally, she was up, struggling a little, but quickly, gaining herself... and looking to the figure of René's mother on the bed, clapping her paws together, and bowing in respect, as the gems glinted again. “...And I apologise to you as well, Mrs Vulpes...” Faith took a breath. “I may not be able to ask you for your permission...but I hope you'll one day be able to afford my forgiveness...”
With that she closed her eyes, as the world became a many hued land of blue shades and forms. She hadn't wanted to do this with René in the room because of course he wouldn't have let her up and secondly, if the Doctors were truly right...she didn't want to be the one to tell René the truth there.
She instead, now, turned her focus upon herself her Aura Vision was spread so wide but she had to condense it, concentrate it as she pulled the circle of her vision tighter and tighter, until it lay just around her and she raised her right palm, holding it towards the peaceful form before her, holding it above the Ninetales, and concentrating: hard. Until finally, a small blue orb seemed to apparate there beneath her palm and she focused herself to look at this woman and see her, see inside her, to see her Aura, and to read whatever she could find if anything any flame, any flicker or spark of life that still held on!
The girl had to concentrate, and concentrate hard. as she searched, through the levels of the womon's being pushing past the dark layers of her body, seemingly empty, seemingly lost. Her brow furrowed, as the ball flickered in palm she was used to holding her ability for far longer than this but, normally, what she saw was a fuzzy, almost far off silhouette; she was searching, trying to find the last fragments of this woman's being something to give her hope, something to give René hope!
“And there! Her orb flickered again, and again, pulsing...a beat! She pulled back, just for a moment—and there, there it was!!! Small, but alive, like discovering a seed among the rubble of ruin ready to sprout, a single flame, a single flicker of life, a single source of the Ninetales' aura!!! She was still in there, if only just!!!
René opened the door with Faith's drink in hand...and promptly dropped it on the floor with. “What are you doing?!”
Her eyes flung open as the world of Aura vanished. She'd concentrated so hard, she hadn't even sensed him coming, as she let go, and suddenly, she overbalanced, falling back to the floor with a sudden cry!
René looked back and forth from his mom, Vera, to Faith on the floor, and finally went over to help Faith back into her seat. “Just what did you think you were doing?!” He snapped at her.
Faith didn't even wait to be helped into her seat, as one gloved hand gripped hold of him, tighter than before... she had to tell him, she had to stop him and tell him, even though she was in pain, this was far more important than her!!* She's alive!!
Jazzfoxrules: Faith: *The girl sounded so tired, having forced herself to look that hard, half panting as she spoke* ...She's still there... René... her Aura... is still intact! Your mother, is still there!!
René didn't even hear her. “Faith you're not supposed to be out of your chair and you're definitely NOT supposed to be doing anything with...or to...MY MOM! Now I don't care what you were doing but I never want you to--” He paused. “Say what?”
The girl spoke, her eyes almost welling up as she spoke. “I used my Aura...and searched for hers... it's small...and it's weakened...but she's still there...and she's still fighting, René...she's still alive...”
He stood there, unmoving, as if paralyzed. Then René fell down on his rear, hard, still not saying a word. Faith in turn, fell, gritting her teeth, as she felt it in her leg her paws shooting to the leg but nothing more than a grimace. She wouldn't complain or cry out. She looked to him and slowly, let her smile rise again. “...She's still there...”
“Mom...” René said after a long pause he leapt up, rushed over to Faith and stared her in the face. “She's...she's really in there? She can wake up?!”Faith wiped her own eyes first, before nodding slowly to him, as certain, and sure, as anything she would ever tell him.
“She may take a while...but she's still fighting René...she's really there.”
Grasping her paws René gasped. “C-can you help her? Can you wake her up??” She slowly had her face fall...slowly, her ears and tails fell, answering him before she could.
“I'm...not strong enough...” She held out her palm to him, showing it shaking. “It took all I had...just to find her Aura...”
René looked dissapointed but not too much. “B-but she's still there right?” The girl once more nodded to him, smiling slowly once more, as sure as could be.
“Yes, René, she is.” René went escatic.
“Mom' still in there! Thank you Faith! Thank you SO much!” He planted a full-on kiss right on her mouth! The girl flushed right over, surprised say the least, falling back as he kissed her, lying there, simply not doing anything for the thought of not knowing HOW to react!
“I love you! Do you know how long I wanted to here this? Thank you Faith, THANK YOU! I can never thank you enough for this!” He hugged her as if he'd never hugged before!
She winced immediately at the hug, and her still tender sides from the Air Slashes Pyre had given her... but she wouldn't complain, as she only smiled and hugged him back. “You don't need to, René...” She grinned through her pain, looking back to Vera's form... wondering, if only perhaps... she could tell how happy her son was right now...”
René rushed over from Faith over to Vera. “Mom...I know you're still in there. Please....come back to me.” He kissed her brow. “I'll be back...we'll find some way to help you, I know we will! Just please....don't give up.” He looked up after a minute to Faith again.
“Faith....I'm in your debt. Forever.” She slowly pushed herself up, smiling as she watched her fellow Vulpix and sat there finally, letting loose a small relief, as her ribs no longer felt like they were on fire, and looked to him. “Well...how about you give me that soda, and we'll call it even?”
“Sure!” René exclaimed, then paused. “Um could you also not tell anyone about the part where I kissed you?”
Faith just laughed.

THE END!

Grace: I wonder if I could help...
Sammy: What could you do anyway?
Grace: Hello, earth to moron, there's a reason why Jirachi are associated with wishes. We can grant wishes... Under some circumstances...
Sammy: Which are?
Grace: Well, only adult Jirachi can grant large wishes, and even then, it's pretty draining. Of course, my parents are both Jirachi.
