Were you honestly expecting to nail this painting business, right out of the gate?
The stuff looks good. As others have said, you're headed in the right direction.
All that's needed now is practice. Don't worry about what a pic *doesn't* look like. Get your flow going first, figure out what's good and what isn't and then improve from there.
Am I actually having to give Our Host advise on how to be an artist? What a weird day this is.

Why not use rougher brushes, brushes with texture?
They add some grain to the strokes and make it all blend together softer and more natural.
I am by no means good with backgrounds since i almost always skip them but i learned to love brush and layer textures...and to not rely on them to much as well. u.u°
