Me playing this giant instrument.
The Contrabass Clarinet is the largest of the clarinet family, and it plays two octaves below the Bb Clarinet and an octave below the Bass Clarinet. It doesn't usually have a regular spot in normal orchestra/band pieces but on the rare occasion a composer will ask that there be that extra low end and possibly even a solo. In this case, I do have a solo in the two upcoming concerts in a piece called Sasparilla by John Mackey. I play it among the pieces I play below. This instrument is a lot of fun to play, albeit a little big for a little mouse ^^;
0:00 - 0:27 Sasparilla - John Mackey
0:28 - 0:54 On the Waterfront - Leonard Bernstein
0:56 - 1:08 Molly on the Shore - Percy Grainger
1:09 - 1:30 Get Up, Stand Up (Bass Line) - Bob Marley and the Wailers (For
sawyerthecat)
1:32 - 1:45 D major scale (C Concert)

Ah well there are a few wind instruments that produce that low grumble, with the Contrabass Clarinet being one of them. The Contrabassoon is another one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVAe7YBUc6c and is probably the more common. And the other instrument, probably the most loud and bombastic of the three is the Sarrusophone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51lcyVGorYQ Sarrusophones are rare, and people who play them well are even more rare so generally people favor contrabassoon or contrabass clarinet over it.
Ah, interesting, didn't know about either of those instruments before. I would say that the contrabass clarinet does seem to have a brighter sound than either of them though. I think they used it in some older Disney cartoons. Winnie the Pooh is the one that comes to mind immediately. n.n
