I was picking up
exdraghunt from work a few weeks ago and had a chance to snap this photo. I was able to drive up onto the dock where these ships are moored and thought it would be cool to snap a few photos. Sadly didn't have my DSLR with me, and my car is less than clean. Might have to try to do this again sometime when I'm more prepared.
These ships are docked behind the Museum Of History And Industry(MOHAI) at South Lake Union in Seattle, so if you ever are in the area, it's a cool place to check out.
To the far left is the Virgina V, a wooden hull steam powered passenger ferry built in 1922 and one of the last remaining vessels from the old Mosquito Fleet days. She still runs and is available for rent for dockside events, or even to charter to go out on the water. It's really cool to see an old fashion steam engine in operation. This is also the ship that
exdraghunt works on, hence me picking her up from work.
In the middle is the wooden hull tug boat Arthur Foss built in 1889 which they are in the middle of restoring at the moment. An interesting note is that she was the last boat to escape Wake island in 1941 before the Japanese invasion,
And the red ship on the right is Lightship No. 83 'Swiftsure' Built in 1904, she is one of the oldest lightships in the country, and is the only one to retain her original steam engines, even if they no longer work. She is also currently being restored, most of the decking having been removed to be replaced with newer decking, so she is currently wearing a plastic cover to help prevent rain from leaking in.
And of course my car, a 2011 Honda CR-Z EX. She was built August 2010 in Japan. It's a car.
This has been your educational hour.
