To me, Beltane is the Pagan valentines day...it celebrates the ripening of all that spring has brought as well as the sexual union of the Goddess and the God. Weddings and handfastings are common on this holiday (I myself am planning on getting married next Beltane )
For those who are wondering - yes, this Alcarin is male. Yes, he's pink. Yes, I know that's a bit of a feminine color. No, I don't care. I think with Fantasy art, and especially a Fantasy race such as this, an artist is allowed to challenge gender roles and the things that our society typically sees as "male" or "female". And on that note, any Pagan knows that every person, be they a man or a woman, IS a union of Goddess and God...containing both male AND female energy!
Having said that, this Alcarin is just pink because flamingos are pink...simple as that. Alcarin always have a bird companion and as they mature, their fur and plumage begin to match their bird. He sits watching the sunrise, but sends a flirtacious glance back at the viewer as if to invite them to come sit closer and watch it with him. The rose he holds in his mouth might later be given as a gift. His staff, decorated in rainbow ribbons, reminds of the Maypole and all around him, bees and butterflies enjoy the abundant flowers.
Original size is 11" x 14", colored pencil

hih, pink... but then again, why not?
I was about to say he'as flirting, but he also seems to plan on a friendly little prank judging by his little grin. :)
bright colours, little flower details, and of course the plumage, all is wondrous and colourful and friendly. I also like the long, fuzzy hair, but I like long hair per se. :)
do the bees mind that he's eating their roses? ^^
