Demon snek should know better than to stand (?) next to magical fiery geysers.
His mother taught him better than that.
Anyways. This was to prove to myself (1), that I have the ability to draw things that aren't dragons and (2), to entirely paint a picture and not use lineart.

Hehehe I'm gonna keep bugging you about this: more drastic shading and contrast, and sharper edges. Use layers to your advantage and really go heavy on the shading. I usually hit my images with the auto-contrast and auto-colour tools after everything's said and done, just to give it that last little bit of correction that brings out the highlights and shadows.
I'm getting into the habit now of avoiding inking of any sort, and relying on my original sketches for object placement. Once I get my colour flats down, lines go away unless I need to refer back to them for little details.

I do see! I've never really wanted to get into the painterly style but my art seems to be pulling me in that direction, if that makes sense. And yeah, darker darks and lighter lights was something that all the art teachers have tried to pound into my head.
The auto contrast wouldn't work for whatever reason, but I did some manual fiddling:

I agree that it looks much more dynamic with the shadows being lighter, and I can see how having them as such could open up more options for my shading and lighting, as well. So I think the next picture I'll fiddle with it a little more before calling it done!
