A grrrrrrrrrrrreat casserole from
!
As I was sniffing around my fridge and pantry for something to eat yesterday, a vision of a casserole suddenly flashed in my head. I had the hamburger in the freezer, the macaroni (casserole elbow noodles), and the tomato sauce already, the only thing I was missing was the cheese. So after having some ramen noodles for lunch, I put the hamburger in the fridge to defrost, then went to the Stop & Shop and picked up some mozzarella cheese.
So today, I put it all together. Cooked the macaroni, browned and spiced the ground beef (I used some chili seasoning, fresh ground black pepper and a touch of sea salt) put them in my Pyrex casserole dish (REAL Pyrex, not that fake Pyrex they sell today), mixed in the tomato sauce, and covered the whole thing in a nice layer of the shredded mozzarella. Tossed it in a 375-degree (Fahrenheit) oven for 25 minutes and BOOM! Done!
It was good. REALLY good! Good in the way that it can't possibly be any good for me. Fat? AND how! Calories? I don't even want to THINK about it. Carbs? Yes. Umami? Ooo Daddy! This will probably last me for the rest of the week.
I'd write out the recipe, but the spices were measured in "this looks about right" and "maybe a little more." I'll offer the guidelines below...
1 16oz (464g) box casserole elbow macaroni
1.25lb. (give or take) ground beef
2 15oz. (425g) cans tomato sauce
4 cups shredded (whole milk) mozzarella cheese
chili seasoning
Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb seasoning
salt & pepper
Cook macaroni to al dente, drain
Brown ground beef, drain fat, add chili seasoning (a tablespoon or so), salt and pepper.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a casserole dish (I didn't prep/spray/grease the inside), combine the macaroni and beef. Pour in the two cans of tomato sauce and combine fully. Add another sprinkling of chili seasoning to the top. Cover with the mozzarella. Add a tablespoon or two of the Mrs. Dash on top of the cheese so that all parts get some.
Bake for about 25 minutes. Mangia!
