I was younger than usual, probably about a year old. I couldn't talk, I couldn't walk, I could barely even crawl. Even my mind was in a bit of a fog at this age. Regression down this far was rare, thankfully, but it did happen from time to time.
I was glad though that Bella had taken me to the park despite my feeble protests. As usual, she was right. The fresh air and sunshine did make me feel better, and crawling around on the grass certainly felt better than the carpet. Even better were the smells. Badger eyes are fairly weak, ears are average, but our noses are top rate. Especially at this younger age with my eyes and ears not fully developed yet, smell was even more important to me than usual.
It was a rich new world. The grass, Bella's own heady scent of Lavender and Jasmine bath salts and her, the various flowers, trees, and other living things at the park. All ripe for olfactory exploration. I caught a familiar scent, different somehow in this environment. I followed my nose to it's source as Bella watched me closely. Closely bunched, purple flowers. Lavender!
I was of course familiar with the scent as part of Bella, but I'd never encountered it in it's natural state before, and I can't even begin to describe how much purer, how much more intense it was just by itself. I inhaled deeply, triggering memories of all the good times with my wife, all the joys, all the sorrows, every spat and every make-up. All went flooding through my developing brain.
I smiled, opened my eyes and blearily focused on her face, hovering nearby. "Ba gah!" I uttered, slightly frustrated that I couldn't even say her name right now, but I think she understood. She smiled, and leaned forward to share a sniff of the lavender with me.
Life was good.
