Hey, it could be worse; they could've replaced it with Starbucks.
(Actually, now that I think about it... did you guys even get those particular commercials Down Under? I imagine they had to sift through a lot of "hidden camera" footage to find the one customer in the entire restaurant who couldn't tell the difference between brewed coffee and that instant junk... then again, that was back in the late 70s/early 80s, when most people in the US didn't know what decent coffee was anyway.)

Ahhh, well -- it was an ad campaign by Folgers, in which they would claim to have "secretly" switched the coffee at some gourmet restaurant or coffeehouse with Folger's instant, then show hidden-camera footage of customers praising the coffee and being surprised when told it was instant coffee:

Of course, at some point, they did have to start putting the disclaimer that "invited guests received a free meal", which somewhat called into question just how objective these "invited guests" were, and how much of this supposedly "candid" hidden-camera footage was actually staged... But they got enough mileage out of it that the whole "we've secretly replaced ____ with (blatantly inferior substitute)" managed to get cemented as a pop-culture meme, even if the coffee itself is like drinking muddy dishwater.
