I've had a theory for a long time, having to do with dragons. It is great sign of trust that one allows them to ride on them. They are sharing their ability with others. It is also a great burden on the dragon, for they must make sure they don't fall off. (not to mention extra weight) When one flies with a dragon, it is a sure sign of a deep friendship. Just be sure not to carry more than you can handle. Otherwise, you wind up like in the Inheritance series and technically, you could fly and be there before anyone else, and thus you have to go around in circles because everyone on ground is slower than you are.
