Watch me hammer the shit out of this. First off, focus is about 20+feet after the beaver subject. No clouds in the sky equals no texture, ergo a far too monochromatic piece. Framing sucks, should include far more of the sky above the sun. The tree on the left is also out of the frame and would provide a nice sharp crisp element to the background thus balancing out the smooth color ramp of the sun. With this much light, shooting into the sun, F-stop can easily be increased to 22 or higher and shutter speed can be dropped to 1/100, more depth of field and a crisper picture.
Remember... always hammer the CRAP out of your art. Be ruthless and completely brutal about it. If you don't, someone else will.

Welp, it's always easy to look back on a photo and say, 'aw, man, I should have framed it this way, and gotten more of that in the b/g, and set the shutter speed at this...' In the heat of the moment, though, when your subject is swimming away from you and you have to think quickly on your feet, I'd say getting a shot like this is pretty durn good.
Well I did have a few things going on that allowed me to get this (and about 10 others but this is the best of course). I knew what his swimming pattern was going to be, zig-zag back and forth checking me out while meandering back to the lodge, so I was able to run to a spot where I could get set and such and line his path up with the sunrise. Still, time it, it takes about 30 seconds for the sun to move one diameter and moving even a few feet in conditions like these can change the picture significantly.
This is a shot I'll be able to revisit though and eventually I'll get those really REALLY good ones. It's been a year since I took these and I've been waiting patiently for the opportunity to do them again...

Oh ha! And here's as close as I've gotten to that tail-slap picture...

Close, but no see-gars!
