Taina Vainui was born in French Polynesia, the daughter of a Tahitian who is a chieftain in a Society island where he runs a succesful resort. She got everything she wanted since she was a child and therefore has an air of superiority. She went to Grant State University in Ohio in the 80's, and like most high-status therians there, she joined the infamous Gamma Theta sorority. Her and the future professor Naguiba Qawwi were particularly close during that time.

The character was inspired by Polynesian otters designed by  lei-lani and  seskata. I think I like this one a lot! I tried to marry her Polynesian heritage to an American 80's sensibility with this design.
