This was originally sketched back during my semester in Costa Rica, fall of 2004, on one of the deviders in my notebook. I even got it inked about halfway before it was set aside for quite some time.
About a year ago now I went through a bunch of my notebooks, cleaning them out and organizing sketches so that I can find them. This one was so close to being ready to color that I went ahead and finished it. I also learned not to try to ink on those devider things again. They don't cooperate with microns and it ends up smudging if you're not careful.
Mostly this was an exercise in coloring (and knotwork). There are a few things with the anatomy I have issues with but I figure I've learned the lesson (since it was already three years old by the time I got to coloring it!) and focused on seeing what watercolors, watercolor pencils, and colored pencils would do for me.
Finally, my scanner bed is juuuuust a smidge smaller than the bristol I was working on, that's why it's a little cut off on the right and at the bottom.

Thanks!
I thought during the process that I had messed up on the knotwork since things weren't matching up during the inking phase but it ended up working out just fine. Tricksy knotwork! Messing with my brain! So far this is the only pattern I've managed, though I do experiment with it from time to time and I've been meaning to look for references so I can see about leveling up my knotwork skillz.
