You're almost doing it right. You need a counter-lever for the talons.
Think about it. When you press on the talon tips, and they push back into the top of your finger they'll look like they're bending back.
I assume the bolt/screw you're using is located right about your fingernails in those vinal cups, right? Take a small strip of sturdy metal or plastic. Use the same bolt to attach it in place and run it along your finger up to your first finger knuckle. That should provide some support for when you press on the talons, use them, etc.
(I've done things like this before.)
