So, while I was working, this idea came to me - I liked it a lot, and used it to guide my adopt designs. The character designs came to me as I painted them, starting with a basic animal or general colour scheme and working from there. Note, these are just ideas - You're welcome to use them, or use the pictures for your own character concept, if you purchase the adopt.

Kotryce
"Kotryce" is the given name for individuals experiencing a rare magickal phenomenon that transports them to other planes of existence, specifically magickally-attuned planes. These 'kotryce' generally are changed by their encounter, exhibiting the traits of the plane they visited in their transformation, and soon find themselves back in their home dimension, altered in many ways. They generally develop glowing marks on their skin, perhaps gain a discolouration in their eyes, hair or flesh, and sometimes may change form entirely, becoming more animalistic or changing genders. Physical changes seem almost random, erratic, but the Plane will subtly influence the mind as well, shifting the individual to take a little piece of the Plane back with them in their mannerisms and thoughts.
Certain kotryce are more popular than others (fire, for example, is a common love amongst mages and as such many kotryce form from mishandling or misfires from their spells), but almost universally a kotryce, upon returning to their home plane, becomes intensely powerful from their brief flirtation with the magickal plane, casting spells related to their transformation with fluid ease.
It is thought some tribes purposefully expose non-magi to the power of the Planes, eliciting transformation on even the uninitiated with powerful spells and enchantments, but such rumours have never been substantiated.
*Example 1: Midnight, Plane of Illusive Chaos. This rather uncommon kotryce had strangely glowing, unnaturally-coloured fur with shadows and lights that shift constantly as one looks on. Her markings constantly swirl, re-form and coil depending on her mood, and her skill with illusion magic and chaotic energies is unsurpassed. Her new nature affects her mood, however, and she is known to be emotionally fickle and capricious. No one knows who, or what, she was before her transformation... and she certainly isn't telling.
* = Sold To:
Cataena
Example 2: Amara, Plane of Fire. While almost refined at times, this grey-black oddity has a temper that annihilates any poise she might try to affect whenever inflamed. It is said she was a human once, a magus of some repute, but her visit to the Plane of Fire did more to change her form than her mindset - that temper's been with her since she was a child, and her change only made it worse. Beware getting on her bad side.
Example 3: Ni'tala "Lynx", Plane of Storms. Once a poor elven girl working as a servant to a magus, Ni'tala had the luck of being in her lord's manor when a magickal explosion rocked the entire foundation, electrical energy surging through the home. While most died, Ni'tala was transported to the Storm Plane, forever changing her. While she was not blessed with powerful electrical magic to the same degree a magus might in her circumstance, she was gifted with lightning-fast reflexes, a type of blindsight exhibited by using and reading electrical charges, and minor spells like lightning blasts. She's now working as a mercenary, the playful, inquisitive girl simply known as 'the Lynx' to her former kin.
Example 4: Syrce, Noxious Plane. A powerful witch, this dark feline deliberately made herself a kotryce - the magic of venom and toxins can be extremely deadly to wield, and she often found herself having to recover from her own sickness as much as her opponents. Rather than give up the magic she loved, she willingly risked her life to enter the Plane and came back far more powerful, but her mind has become even more malevolent and twisted from the experience.
