Dear L - Attention Distraction
This is a drawing from my Dear L book, entitled Attention Distraction. I dont want to post the entire letter of this picture, but I will be gladly to give you the summery of it.
Basically, the picture speaks for itself. The guy on the right is a new comer, a new artist in a convention. He has set his table up with images and books, ready to greet his fans and friends, hoping to end the day with sold images and money in his pocket. But along came a famous artist who has work all over the net and has an eye for excellent detail and figures. She has set up a table next to him and from there, became a magnet for attention. The new comer on the right is now nothing to those who are around the famous artist's table.
I have never been to a convention, but from what I feel and the images of furry conventions on the web, it must be difficult to be seated next to someone who more or less "intimidates" you for hours due to his/her excellent work and popularity. There are a lot of artists I envy on the web. So many artists that hold special talents that would be almost impossible to copy or learn from.
I think it is everyone's dream to be as good of an artist as the one next to them, or to be as good as those who inspires them.
To the side, I think that it is all about style; how one draws a certain line or colors in a certain way that makes the eye wonder. They are works of art. But sadly, to me, I dont see enough meaning in a delicate piece of artwork. The only common feeling/emotion I get form those pieces is just adult themes; sex and lust. I know that this might not be true to many, but if anyone would point out an artist that draws and colors with the most delicate and talented way that shows emotion or something that would make one think ( not with their second head -_-;; ), please show me. But if you think about saying that I am that artist ( like I know many of you do/have done ), I have not yet reached such a talent and maybe will never be.
There are many artists who cannot draw as well as the other, but they hold meaning to them. I like those kinds of art; the figure may not be a beauty, the coloring may be dull, the line work might be stringy, but the meaning which it holds behind is something that will never be called poor.
A way to make a picture so beautiful to one's eye is not the detail or rendering, but the message that holds behind it, that feeling that the viewer can connect to the image. It is all about connection.
I sound like a darn art teacher when I am still a student -_-;;;;;;;;

I really like this picture. More so because it does speak out about how a lot of the coventions work.
I'm still trying hard to aspire to be a better artist and I do hope to eventually sit down at the tables. (Hopefully in a good couple years.)
But I respect a lot of art, no because of it's structure or style, but mostly because of the meaning behind it. Or if it's a single character, the display on that character.
Most all I got posted up are my poems, a couple stories and an art piece or two.
Keep working at it, tough times may come along but persistance will win through it all. :)

Whether you are intimidated by an artist you feel is 'better' than you is up to you. Some people would just see it as a challenge. And while there will be many people clustered around the 'famous' artist, at least some of them will take the time to look over the neighboring artists...And that may be more people than otherwise would pass your table.
Too, if the famous artist isn't too full of themselves, it may be that you can talk to them, trade ideas, and learn. Including yourself in their conversation will be noticed by their fans, who will then wonder who you are and pay more attention to your work.
If you let yourself be intimidated into silence and sulking simply because you're sitting next to someone 'famous', that is your choice. Just remember, they are only another person in the long run. Whether you view them with fear, or envy, or hatred, or simply as an equal who you need to work a little harder to keep up with is a choice that YOU make and noone else.

I should note that in years past I have sat next to people like Steve Gallacci, Monika Livingstone, Sara Palmer, Steve Martin, and Brian O'Connell...Vintage 'big name' sellers. In truth, what was more important to me by the end of the day was whether they were decent and friendly people, or assholes. A decent and friendly person is a pleasure to sit next to and will notice if 'their' people are obscuring your table or 'blocking' your customers and even chide their fans to pay more attention to you. An asshole will try to engage curious visitors looking at your art even if they are standing on the far side of you, more concerned with making another sale and being the center of attention than with sharing space.
Don't let this make up your mind too quickly about someone, though. Sometimes someone who seems like an asshole doesn't realize what they are doing. Showing them the generosity and concern for their tablespace may make them 'wake up' and do the same for you.
If that doesn't work, feel free to think whatever you like of them. ;) The truth is that simply because someone can draw beautiful and good things does not mean they are a beautiful and good person. It is an old saying in fanart that some people should just be nailed into boxes with slots so food can be slid in and art taken out.

I don't think the point is so much as to whether or not it's true...
But I can say this much. When playing live music with experienced musicians it's hard. Around friends and stuff you can bust solos or do anything. But when you know someone better is there, you freeze up. Even if they like the way you play you just can't ever think you're good enough.
It's just a mental thing. It's hard being around people you look up to, because sometimes you just aren't mentaly ready to be compared to them.

Good message in the picture and a good picture at that! Love the inking technique.
Ironically... I know what it's like to be both artists in the picture. I'm the average artist who gets hardly any attention, but at the same time I'm the musician who get professional attention.
So I can relate to both.

..i'm sorry, i must seem like i'm just ragging on you in the last few posts i made, but i still feel the need to give you the other side of the view.
not every artist can, or should be treated equal, it is not right, i am nowhere near the artist you are...should i be treated the same as you? no. a good artist IS good because they have a good eye for detail, composition, style, and whathave you. a well drawn pic of yiff is still better than an emotional pic of a stick figure. it is up to the person looking at the pic to determine it's worth, or it's message, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, not what an art teacher in collage tells you it has. it's just what i've heard in collage before, that if you see someone who is more talented than everyone else, that instead of looking at the artist with admiration, that they must be envious and find some way of picking apart the art and make everyone feel that looking at a great artists yiff pic is bad because it has no meaning....it is bull. not all people can be as talented as everyone else, i am not as talented as you, i don't get depressed by that, i aspire to be as talented as you. just because someone is more talented and "wastes" their talents on a yiff pic, doesen't mean they aren't deserving of praise. it's not about wether or not you can draw sex or not, it's about if the meaning you're trying to get accross is worth listening to.

Its the world of art in a nutshell, not just in drawing. When a new writer publishes his first book he gets compared to other more popular authors and usually overlooked for someone whos already been around the block a few times and made their way with their work... this is what I fear most when I actually get everything for the novel Im wanting to start done and write it... I fear being overlooked cause Im the new guy, and nobody knows me.
i uset to sit in the museum of art and just look at the art there and make up meanings for myself, then afterwards id read what the artist wrote about it. I have alwyas believed that the art is in the meaning of what is shown, art to me is food for thought. ... i dont think that has anything to do with the picture but thas what i thought after looking at it ^^
