The terminal illness was a blessing in disguise. He'd never thought that travelling to Planet Machinus would be his last hope to live. They'd explained how the process worked- his memories downloaded, his brain slowly digitalized, every little bit of organic matter gradually brought to full term in his transformation... but he didn't catch half of it. And though they'd said his body was 'stock,' he was still amazed with it nonetheless. And creating his own custom parts? That would be a new adventure in and of itself.

It's a little complicated. As long as there aren't any political conflicts with keeping them citizens, they may stay. And they're not complete anthrobots, as they have organic urges and things of that nature. So they're handled a little differently by the mainframe, and often encouraged to venture out among their own kind.
