Skin looks too much like fabric, rather than something akin to leather, vellum or parchment.

Skin has that ever so slightly translucent look to it.

Even when utterly utterly filthy, a small amount of light would get though, giving that fleshy skin appearance. after all, it would flake off after a time, cracks would appear.
