Bought a truck toolbox from a friend and felt the need to do some painting. I want a wolf head on the side, but the stencils available didn't cut it, and it doesn't feel right to look around for a drawing and copy it. Since my drawing isn't very good, I gave myself a one week challenge to see how much of an improvement I could make from the day one drawing (bottom left).
First one was drawn with only a reference picture focusing on the teeth (wolves have 42 teeth). Somewhat decent, but definitely nowhere near what I would allow to show on my truck. Muzzle is a bit blocky, lower jaw definitely too thick, ears are bleh, and the curve of the head just has a humanish feel to it.
Second (day two), looked up some pictures of wolves snarling to get the teeth better set in the gums. Muzzle is too long, lower jaw thickness has improved but still not right, eye isn't set right (couldn't really find a good spot), and the top of the head is still too humanish.
Day three consisted on staring at copious amounts of pictures. So much so that I was visited by a few wolves in my sleep that night.
Third (day four), tried a different eye style and gave the line from the muzzle a much steeper angle. Added some facial features as well. Better, but still not right. Between the eye and that head line, it still feels human. Ears are too thin, not sure what I was thinking.
Finally, the big one (day five. This is actually a fix of the third drawing (same piece of paper). I added a more pronounced brow over the eye and went back to my original eye design. Thickened the ears, which I like now. I'm pretty satisfied with this one. Five days, not seven, but hey... where's my airbrush?
