Making shadows work (instead of square) through plane with alpha channel:
Texture Properties → Image → Select "Premultiply" option.
Texture Properties → Image Sampling → Under "Alpha" heading enable "Use" option.
Texture Properties → Influence → Under "Diffuse" heading enable "Alpha" option.
Material Settings → Shading → Enable "Shadeless" option.
Material Settings → Transparency → Enable "Z Transparency" option.
Material Settings → Transparency → Set alpha slider value to "0.000".
Material Settings → Options → Enable "Traceable", "Face Textures", and "Face Textures Alpha".
For objects that receive shadow:
Material Properties → Shadow → Enable "Receive" and "Receive Transparent" options.
