Hi everyone, I am trying to find a home for our raw fed cat, Mikan (pronounced Mee-kahn, which is japanese for orange). I have allergies so she isn't allowed upstairs, on furniture, or in our sleeping areas, and we feel she would be much happier being in a more cat accommodating home. :/ If anyone in the Portland Oregon area can help us, please let me know.
When we first got her she was obese, had receding red gums and was balding on her stomach and tail from skin allergies. We put her on a raw commercial diet, and then made our own food from raw cat food recipes online - she slimmed down gradually, and has a lovely coat and her health is great! She is a submissive cat and very well-mannered. Does not jump on counters, loves to be brushed and is very polite and tolerant. She loves to snuggle under blankets and be near people. She is great company. 8 years old, so she's not super crazy energetic like a kitten, but does enjoy playing with string and crinkly objects. She is tolerant of children, though if they are a bit much she would rather hide than be defensive. Spayed, and is chipped - we actually never got around to registering her chip, so you can have the paperwork for it.
We ask that she be kept on a raw food diet, either home made with a recipe (and we have the supplements to add to the food), or a commercial diet (she was on Primal Turkey) if possible, though at the minimum canned food with NO grain or fillers (as much meat as possible) would probably be fine. We think she has allergies to grain, she definitely is allergic to fleas. She should be indoors only, and no dogs unless they are very friendly and will leave her alone. She is scared easily. Great personality, always happy to see you and loves to purr.
If you can direct me to other groups that may help me out, that would be great as well. Please spread the word, I have been having a hard time finding her a new home. I'm reluctant to return her to the humane society because that's where her first owners got her, and they took really awful care of her if I could even call it that. Their dog terrorized her and they refused to treat her fleas to the point she had horrible allergies. They have so many pets coming in they don't really screen owners, and since she is prone to health problems on a cheap diet I would rather try to take the time to find her the right home. :/ but I digress.. Sorry if I got on a bit of a soapbox there. Thanks!

Ahhh my god she's almost the spitting image of my cat Hana (I did a doubletake - how did Kitsumi get a pic of my cat??). Look, old pic: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1708598/
If I was closer I'd totally take her in, we're 'short' a cat here (two cats, three people! XD) and we're big label-reading catfood snobs here, ha.

Wow! She does look super similar! I had never heard of torbie and white coat colors until we got here, and well lookie here.. :) i am flying down to califur, though then it's a matter of the pet cost on the plane and her likely not dealing well with traveling.. She completely emptied her bladder and bowels on the way back from the shelter, you'd think we were taking her to kitty Mordor or something. :/ i haven't had much luck otherwise and would seriously consider bringing her down, I think feliway might help with keeping her calm.
Oh gosh no, we don't live in Cali anymore. <:* I'm in PA now, which is why I was saying it'd be super far...we actually shipped my cat over here via airline cargo after moving so we'd have her here with the least amount of stress, but that's still long hours in flight time (although I've never tried Feliway and stuff like that to calm a cat before).
Ohhhh. I had no idea you moved! :O yeah, it's probably best for me to find her a home local or at least on the west coast. I had no idea how poorly cats do with being moved. We had her catsat not too long ago and she would sit in a corner and stare at the floor looking incredibly depressed. She did this even when we brought her home. -.- well, if you know anyone who is looking for a great kitty, let me know! :)
I'll keep an eye out! Unfortunately the closest people to you I know who like cats are already cat-full (trying to integrate two households into one, adding two rough 'n' tumble bros + one mild girl means the girl cat is getting kinda bullied and pushed around, so they've got their hands full). If nothing else my house is here if for some reason you just can't find any close by. Haven't had a cat yet that didn't bounce back from moving 'shock' (air shipping is so much more merciful than driving, guh) and we've had a lot of experience with allll kinds of cat personalities over the years, haha.
Yeah, I figure most folks who would be interested are likely maxed out on cats already. :/ sending her to you might be a real possibility though I'm likely going to need to try to do a little fundraiser for her traveling costs. And can cats be sent solo? Did you put yours in a big enough crate to have a litterbox, or do they not want anything in there besides just the cat? I will probably continue looking for another week (i've been looking for almost a month now), then figure something out from there...
Oh I've shipped cats several times. Hana's made the jump not only from CA to PA, but also previously HI to CA. It's kind of pricey but not crazily so (I want to say it's like $200ish but probably depends on carrier, time of year, etc). Generally the airlines have specs on what kind of carrier to put a cat in (generally solo unless they're like tiny kittens, big enough for the cat to stand up and turn around in) and the only thing they want in there is the cat. If you don't have an appropriate carrier you can also buy one from the airlines themselves, at the airport. It has to have a health inspection cert (depending on the rules for the state it's entering) and also you have to sign a thing saying the cat was offered food and water within a certain time period before arriving at the airport. I think you can also provide some food in a bag and have a dish that clips onto the carrier for water, but probably each company has different rules so it'd be best to check with them.
I'll see if I can get some friends to signal-boost your post, too, so that if there's anyone local then the fuss/stress issue is wiped out. :)

Wow, your cat's a pro at traveling. :O I think if I was to send her I might go with Alaska airlines.. Heard way too many horror stories about delta. Thanks so much for spreading the word, it would be so much easier if someone local took her. Seattle isn't too far away either, so I'm hoping someone in the pacific northwest can give her a home.
Yeah, Hana has tended to deal with shipping stress by shedding giant clumps of fur for several weeks and hiding under things, and after that she's Princess Puffball-brain. Between me and Mike we've had a lot of all kinds of cat experiences. <XD His oldest cat lived to be...uh...we think 24-28 or something like that. Weirdly she LOVED dry cat food and always angled to get more of it (and then barf it up, and then try to sneak more), so we chalk that one up to exceptional genetics since her mom was also a cat Methuselah and a barn cat.
I agree with you on the Delta thing, Delta hasn't been even doing good things to regular luggage lately according to my friends' experiences. I think the last time we shipped Hana it was United, which AFAIK had no problems.

Wish you didn't live on the other side of the country. I've been catless for about six months, now and was starting to ponder changing that. Natural food diets are the best. Cats shouldn't eat grain. I used to order my catfood on the internet because stores here didn't carry the natural food I wanted.
Bummer. :/ i have had a few people interested, but yeah, they are all on the other side of the country. Glad to hear you're on the same page about her diet, a friend of ours recently got their cat's teeth extracted for $1000. The slightly higher cost is I think way more worth it in the long run for their health! Where exactly are you?
