So this is an idea I've had in my head for a while now and :Khyaber: was open for commission for a picture to go along with it!
The idea stems from an RPG game I had in my head.
The setting is a Renaissance era alternative universe, somewhere in the 1600-1700s. Taken place in a city called Venus, which is based off the real world city of Venice.
Venus is a powerful trading power, with minimal land holdings. It's power stems from the ability to source spices from otherwise inaccessable lands through the power of dragons.
There are 2 types of dragons, ferals (4legs) and anthros (2 legs). The ferals carry the goods and the anthros act as 'middlemen' to interact with the humans and carry it in smaller amounts to other places.
Venus is unique in that it was founded initially together with humans and dragons and tries to maintain an integrated society due to the wealth that it brings in. Other cities have tried to mimic their design but struggle to overcome the racial issues
The dragon pictured here is one of the main protagonists that I had envisioned, acting as a guide for one of the main guild houses.
At the start of the game, you the main character, come from a middle class family, following tradition and taking up a guard role for one of the guild houses. Your new to the city and not used to Venus's customs, and are assigned a dragon guide to help you understand them. His name is Neil, which is a unorthodox name for a dragon.
One of the main things that annoyed me about the dragon stereotype is that they generally fall into the D&D type, which is old, wise, powerful magic users and isolated. I wanted to break that mold and go for a witty, impulsive, sometimes rude young dragon, a bit of a cowboy basically. I know others have done this (Novik, Mccaffery) but I wasn't a bit fan of those either.
The bag that he is carrying holds messages, potions and money for use around the city. I had planned on having clothes for the dragon... but I still have yet to think up of a comfortable dragon design, with the biggest issue being the wings. I'm thinking perhaps an altered toga, but I'll need to get an artist to draw it.
I've got alot more details on the story of the character, ideas for quests and setting of the world, but I can't be bothered writing them all down here xD. I'll probably end up putting it as a proper story in the future.
