Well, I'm back from AC, and as I said, I'm going to close the poll that seemed to spread throughout FA like wildfire LOL. Seriously though, thanks to those of you who did vote for which song I should upload next. It ended in a tie between the songs "Anything" and "If I Could", which got two votes each. So how do I decide which song wins? Easy!
vera voted for "Anything", and it's her birthday today, so that's the one that wins lol!
There isn't too much of a story behind the song... I don't recall having someone in particular in mind when I wrote it. I believe my friend Jesse (who co-wrote and played keyboards on "Radio Temptation", previously uploaded here) had, at some point, written a single line down on a piece of paper while we tried to write some music: "We've burned all the bridges that stood between our hearts". It never got used, but I always liked it a lot and ended up borrowing it for this song.
The thing that makes this song kind of unique (for me, anyway) is that all it is is me singing and playing an acoustic guitar. Now, I do not play guitar. I don't mean, I don't play guitar very much, or very often... I mean, I do not play guitar. But for a while, I had a borrowed one lying around, and I used it to try to record a few songs, to varying degrees of success (and failure). This is probably the best one of the bunch. The guitar is not tuned correctly. I tuned the strings to get the base chord I wanted to use, and to change chords I just put my whole thumb across the neck of the guitar. So I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, playing the guitar correctly on this song lol.
This is also one of the few songs I've done that is recorded completely live, in one take. It was written in October of 1991, and probably recorded in November of the same year.
"Anything" (4:32)
Written October 1991
Exact recording date unknown, probably November 1991
We've been through this before time and time again
But this will be the last time; this road is at an end
We've burned all the bridges that stood between our hearts
And now we stand on different land, a thousand miles apart
I know you want your freedom, and I want mine too
But I thought that I could still be free and be with you
But there's no point in talking to a heart that's made of stone
And there's no point in going on when you'd rather be alone
And there's no point in anything I try to do... for you
I never tried to keep you tied on a string
I always tried to let you do your own thing
But halfway wasn't good enough, you had to have it all
But everything is nothing when you build up a wall
Maybe someday baby, you'll realize
That pain and loneliness is all your 'freedom' buys
You'll begin to understand what you put me through
But it'll be too late to compensate and see my point of view
And there's no point in talking to someone who doesn't hear
And there's no point in anything when your message is so clear
And there's no point in anything, no point in anything I do... for you
Anything I do... anything I say
Anything is useless when you're so far away
And there's no point in anything...

Did I say that? Honestly, I'm not sure now whether I did or not. I am pretty sure that I played it the opposite way from how most people do (with the 'wrong' hand). Thank you for your compliments... they always mean so much to me. Your faith in this song helped give me the confidence to share it here. :)
I really like the sound of stuff recorded live on a casette player. It feels so warm. <3
Absolutely lovely, Kiffa. I love it. I really do.
And if you're still up for writing lyrics for "If I Loved You", I'd be ever so happy. You have such a nice voice; much, much, much better than my own. Hehe! ;3
