Everyone I've ever showed them to has the same answer.

I wonder if the artist did this impishly on purpose, or if they were just totally oblivious?

Tiki stuff is trendy now, which is great because I'd decorate my house like Trader Vic's if I had the cash (with Mai Tais on tap). As it is, I have a couple tikis like this amorous pair that appear to be, ahem, more than good friends, although these are the most blatant. The others are named Herbert & Dan and Yvan & Philippe.
