nah its fine, you have a lot of talent, its just a new tool, with some practice in a few days you will be drawing awesome stuff.
Try all the tools you have in the software you are using, i dunno if you are using Opencanvas of Photoshop or something else.
user all the layers you need !!! make big pics ! (3000 x 4000 pixels, or more) and dont be afraid of abuse of shades and lights ! 8D its fun and you will have lots of practice.

You need hints?
If your using photoshop, try using magic lasso around specific areas you only want a small filter applied to, instead of applying a filter to the whole picture.
The smudge tool is excellent for blending colors similar to mixing paint on a canvas for an advanced shadowing technique.
And last but not least, you can never go wrong with experimenting, as long as you have an original copy of your picture on file your sure to be fine.
