Don't be afraid to ask if your preferred artist would be willing to do thumbnails!
I charge $3 for 6, but your artist may charge a different amount.
Communication between artist and commissioner is important, but don't panic! Just be polite.
What do some non-digital thumbnails look like? See some of mine here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12301911/
Are you an artist and not sure how to teach yourself to make thumbnail sketches? Here's a simple info page about them: http://drawsketch.about.com/library.....-sketching.htm
(Thanks Anima for the long commission description!)

What a fantastic notion to use when live streaming is not an option.
I've found that having that one-on-one interaction as the drawing is being made in real time has an incredible advantage. But, when that can't happen, having these two minute representations can do wonders in avoiding misunderstandings.

I was already hooked at the "Uhhh would you like thumbnails? I might not be what you want sooo...", but including that "...Yea no - but how do I say 'no'? / Please don't tell me I suck when it's really just subjective..." bit really sealed it. Good stuff, should be spread around more!
