Wow, I must be too much of a gamer because I assumed everyone has heard of that. x.x
Yeh. As NutJobGTO mentioned, its short for Half Life 2. In it, the main enemy is the 'combine', a slang term for a large multi-dimensinal empire that spans several parallel universes and is run by a race of giant grub-like things called 'advisors' which are artificialy evolved, supported by machinery and are so mentaly advanced they can use affect other's minds and move objects with their will. The main body of their empire is composed of various alien forces from several conqured planets and dimensions that have been cyberneticly and geneticly augmented and enhanced. By altering various alien races into living tools like walking organic attack gun platforms and living breathing troop transports, they can addapt to any situation and due to it's massive size they can overcome any major obstical with only a small portion of their forces. They inslave and assimilate any resistance and harvest resources from their serf worlds to distribute across their empire. In Half Life 2 they pretty much strip the planet of anything usefull, such as draining the world's oceans significantly to redistribute the water across their vast empire. The get their nick-name 'combine' from the earth resistance because they already have addapted humans into special ground troopers called 'the trans-human arm of sector 17 overwatch' by enlisting human volenteers as troopers and altering them with various stages of brain washing and cybernetic implants, the higher ranking overwatch members becoming significantly less and less human with each promotion. Eventualy they become unquestioning shock troops bearing more alien features then Human. (More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Combine )
I figured that from what the first part of the comic showed, it would be possible it was the same combine from the HL universe since they would possibly have human sympathizers working for them and would definately be looking for new and inventive ways at developing dimensinal transportation for further expansion. In Half Life the Combine were attempting to aquire some of the local teleportation technology from the human factions (resistance, apature industries) since their transporation tech is large, unwieldy, and only capable of transporting things across dimensions, not across local space.
... Realizing this is FAR too much information for your question, but I'm bored and I have nothing better to do, so why not write all this up, eh? Excuse all the spelling errors but its 4:43 in the morning and I'm kinda sleepy.
