I always find it amusing that while officially the UK uses the metric system, they still:

measure beer by pints,
measure gasoline by gallons,
measure weight by stones.

It might be good for what "ales" him.

How much is a "stone"? I saw an old Alfred Hitchcock movie (1940s) and people bought gallons of gas. That seemed odd to me. I guess here in America, we're in no hurry to use the metric system.

A stone is about 14 pounds.

We do, finally, buy soda by the litre. I suspect we could switch to metric with liquids, first, since a quart is little less than a liter, and a gallon is a bit less than 4 liters.

But really, while the metric system is great for scientists, why do laypeople have to use it? Besides, it's not even the best system for scientists, either. One based on the speed of light would be much better.

Are fourth roots, roots to the power of four? I've never heard of that.

No, a furthroot, as I have dubbed it, is the square root of a furth, where a furth is a unit of measure of both time and space.

Wow! I just now remember, I think, there was an old Genesis song called, "The Fifth Of Furth". Back when Peter Gabriel sang with them.
