(I realy dislike the "egg"-method, but I understand, the "real way" will cause many many unpleasantly questions to the parents ... so it's easy for the children )

Egg-mode also makes it more game-friendly too. Don't have to deal with having a billion different methods: pregnancies, litters, eggs, sporing, seeds, and everything in-between. In the non-game pokemon world, though, I think that specific pokemon would reproduce in whatever way works for their species, and not just everything an egg. (Ekans lays eggs, Espeon gets pregnant, all that)

Hehe. I had a ditto and a Eevee in the day care and even though they didnt like each other they were making eggs like crazy.
