How long did that take?

5 hours. First hour was spent drawing the picture with a marker directly on skin. After that it was pretty much non-stop tattooing for the rest 4 hours and 45 minutes. My tattoo artist is rumored to be the fastest in town.

Is there some sort of lotion or something on your back?

Some lotion under saran wrap, basic method protecting newly tattooed.

I have panthenol (bepanthen) lotion to help the skin heal, and the tattooed area is wrapped in plastic to help it heal (and to not mess). I am to keep the plastic wrap with lotion for two days, then take a two days break from it. After that I can use only the lotion.

the line work hurt like a bitch. Just like someone had stabbed you with a needle and was dragging it down your skin. Painful as hell. But the coloring was not that pad. It was as if someone was scratching at you with a beard trimmer (without the cover). But once I had sat the 4 hours of being tattooed the pain started to get worse since my skin was getting sensitive. It reminds me of someone using a welder directly on your skin.
But the pain after the tattoo is very minimal. Just some slight ache/burn, but it doesn't really hurt constantly. Just if I raise my arms.
