MARIO MADNESS
Old art from 2007. I remember doing these all in one day. Just felt tips and coloured pencils on thick card, with folded card stuck on the reverse side to help them stand up.

Frankly, Bowser has been the main villain in enough games already. When I saw the first trailer for Super Mario 3D world with Mario, Luigi, Peach and blue Toad, I though for sure we were taking a trip back to Sub Con and Wart would be the main villain again for a change. I was so pumped! Nope, instead we got "Meowser".
I love the big adorable turtle kappa dragon ox thing as much as anyone else here on FA (even you, Langdon) but it's time to give him a fucking break, don't you think? Let him chill in his castle and do nothing for the next game, ya know?
For the next Mario game on the 3DS, my fondest wish is to have Daisy kidnapped again so we have an excuse to return to Sarasaland, a world with environments unlike those of the Mushroom Kingdom. It would be refreshing to be able to use the Super Muffins (they were supposed to be mushrooms, but they looked like muffins in Super Mario Land) and the Rubber Flowers again, and put up with challenging enemies like the Ponpi (the zombie martial artists who would just get faster if you jumped on them). Tatanga could be the main villain again, and perhaps we could even tie in elements from Super Mario Land 2 like having Wario be an antagonist. That would be fun, I think.

Ah, sort of like a diorama frame? That would be neat, and much easier to incorporate a background than like how they're set up here.
One thing I didn't consider while making them is that, because of the stand, they're not reversible (i.e. Mario will always face to the right). If I were to do these standing ones again, I'd like to find a way to make them stand up /and/ be reversible, if possible. Maybe make two identical but opposite cutouts, and sandwich a slice of foam or lightweight wood between them, near the bottom, and glue the bottom edge of the foam to a small circle of card as a base.

Me too, (well, clearly) I think it's severely underrated. While it was a slight deviation from the usual formula, which I don't think is a bad thing by any means, it had some interesting designs and music.
When I was little, that bird head ('Hawkmouth', supposedly) thing scared the bejeezums out of me when it detatched itself from the wall in 7-2 and started flying around. I had to get my dad to defeat it. :I

Oh my gosh, the colors are just colored pencil? They emulate the bright style of the game art really well, yet have a wonderfully muted quality - these are absolutely gorgeous, and expertly shaded! Good god, I would pay money for these... but even more, I want to try something like this!
They're great fun to do! It's difficult to tell from the photo, but I used hatched shading using a brown felt tip, which I could easily scribble over with the pencils for the colouring. I do remember having to fiddle with the colour levels and contrast on this, as the camera was pretty basic even for its time, but I got them as true to life as possible. Markers would be a good alternative, also.
I thought I noticed a crosshatch shading, which just adds to the charm of the style. I'm still amazed that this is colored pencil, as it has the soft hues of pencil but also the smooth, even color of markers. I may very well try it with the prismas I have! Thanks for the response. ^^
