A new character to practice my design skills
She is part of a species that can read minds with their whiskers, including the minds of plants and insects and even the earth, wind, fire and water. Their whiskers can lengthen at will to the character's length and are indestructible (how else to read the mind of fire)
The species name is a mix of clairvoyance and lynx
If anyone had any design tips like how to think creatively that would be awesome as heck! I wanna become a better creator or else I will feel my ability to actually create would go to waste

That is a rad goal. Childlike imagination + adult sensibilities = amazing things.
I find that an interesting dilemma though. I've heard of people not being able to think outside the box, but I've never heard of anyone being afraid to. What's outside yer box that scares you to go there?

I honestly think it's from the years of doing commission work, i was hellbent on making consistency a trait of mine as an artist so i could build my business, so I was afraid to do anything different because people may not like it, which is extremely pessimistic because there's also the option that people will enjoy the change
I just really want to move on and become a better artist! I'm so jealous of people's creativity and ability to alter reality and/or make their own
I just have to find the time to relearn curiosity! I never seem to ask questions

That makes sense. I'm not sure how much it'll help, but here are a few things you could try...
If you can, try digging up stuff you made when you were a child (or a young teenager) and update them.
Take two (or more) unpopular or just plain bad ideas and combine them in a way that makes them awesome.
Work with a partner or other people, they'll be able to provide a viewpoint that doesn't come naturally to you.
Get drunk and scribble. :p

I find with my photography that using a medium you're unfamiliar with helps break your mind away from the monotony. Expose yourself to things that discomfort you. Draw standing up, or while listening to music that you detest. It breaks you away from your comfort zone and forces you to confront this obscure sense of reality in any shape or form. Everyone's minds think differently too so you just gotta keep trying until you find a solution that works best.
I don't think there are many things to be afraid of out of the box - with new creations people look for traits that are important to them:
Does it look strong, tenacious, wild or free? Is it cute enough not to despair of itself? Are there things about it that look like a car accident?
Could this baby be happy or at least stubborn?
One of the few things, that really pisses people off, is when they feel something has been done solely out of conformity or servility.

In all honesty, this is one of the most adorable, amazing, creative, incredible, (did I mention adorable?) designs I have ever seen, and I'm not surprised that it came from you. Sure, everyone can be a little more creative, and pretty much nothing can compare to the pure, natural creativity of a young child but that being said, what you can do and think up is incredible. You have a real natural talent when it comes to this stuff. Countless times, you have amazed me with what you can do and create, so really, when it comes to design, although no one is perfect, I think you're pretty damn close. <3
Love the color set here and the back story on the character!
With respect to designing I think one thing is to not focus on being "creative," thats not to say you should keep doing the same thing over and over again, or to stick "safe" ideas, but rather not get yourself worked up on creating something absolutely "new." Its bloody near impossible. It's just unnecessary stress that can block your mind from just flowing.
A lot of our design comes from what we know and understand though, the more you're aware of, the more you have to play with and extrapolate from to create anew. Learning about different species, or how form influences function in anatomy and physiology can be useful if you're trying to say create a creature around a concept. For example, you want something speedy and agile that lives somewhere near a tropical beach, what sort of build and appearance would benefit that? What colors or diet might it have, or how would that change other things? What about other creatures, how would it deal with them? Question everything.
Being less technical and wanting "spur of the moment" designs, find things that inspire you. A word, a color set, a lyric, texture, whatever. Try making random scribbles and seeing what it forms when you squint and tilt your head making people around you think you're crazy. Try starting from a silhouette and building from there. Take species and combine them, step away from pairs that include species you're really familiar with. Maybe try to find some random generators that spit out animals and try to force them together, see how many different ways you can combine them. It might be something rejected that you'd never actually use, but it would at least likely get you doing something very different from what you're used to, and maybe help loosen you up.
Okay thats long enough, you're already really skilled with color sets and making attractive designs. I hope there might be some idea there that you might find interesting.

Seriously, my creativity always strikes when I'm at work doing something menial that doesn't require a lot of brain activity. Lol.
So my mind is open to all the random things.
I've thought of a pony OC I'd like to try and make and also a comic based on my floofbutt character that's I want to make. If my "skill" will let me.
But yeah.
Moral: Busy hands + Free Mind = Creative Waterfall.

Cherrys guide to designs:
FISRT OF FUCKING ALL Think about what cind of design you want before even start drawing
or ellse you will end up making circles woundering why it is not a character yet.
allso! think about what you want the character for? why would you make a new one?
maby a social lill criter. By that stage you would probadly had imagioned something like for example a
kitty gryphin.
step two, draw a couple of siluettes. dont detail at all! just draw as many as you can.
go look at some animal relaated to the specie you imagioned, to make the silluetes make sence
so it does not look like a complete whatever.
than select one or two and continue working on em adding details n thangs. allso, you can start thinking about colours at this stage.
for colour! make many different combinations. the best colours might not be the first onece you come up with. be adventurus.ยจ
thats it <8,Y
cutey design btw! like the consept allot! looks a little like the bobcat/lucky cat you had before. is this a redesign?

i think designing is more trial and error than anything. obvious tips are think of things you wish to incorporate that you find interesting or are particularly fond of. if you're striving to create something unique, don't, just create what feels the most like "you" and it will inherently be unique all on it's own. you can generally tell when a design seems forced and isn't something that came naturally to the individual.
as you previously mentioned, consistency is something you've strive for but when you go out of your comfort zone to create things it'll always be a depiction of what is actually you, so there's no need to try and focus on making things that are indicative of your style or aesthetic already.
that bein said i would love to eventually get my hands on a design by you~

Personally I find furries and the fandom very limiting in terms of creativity, so my suggestion would be to draw stuff other than furries and explore non-furry artists! Look at many different types of art, from many different places, and pull in mindsets from unfamiliar work and subject matter.
Also, draw without planning or sketching, and very quickly. Dont think about what you're dping or how its looking or if it makes sense, you dont have to show anyone, its just practice to help open up your brain. Eventually, you find yourself letting go and making some truly crazy nonsense, which you can then refine into more polished work while retaining the creativity.

take inspiration from the things around you and soak into your drawing :>
and have positive thoughts when you're drawing too
listen to your fav music too~
when ideas pop in your head write them in a note so you can draw it and build it overtime!
and try to take long breaks from commissions bc working excessively can actually stress you out and kinda screw up your imagination/creativity u,u
