I found this large lady underneath a pair of stones I had purchased for a step way off my back porch. I was moving them to put them in position (they had been sitting a few days) and there she was in the moist grass underneath.
This is a Wolf Spider, I believe from Genus Trochosa, but not sure. She seemed well fed and she was docile enough to stick around for a few photos.

You may not even feel the initial bite, but if you do it will be like being stuck with a small needle.
A spider this large, you will probably feel the bite.
The affect of its venom may cause some minor swelling, pain, and itchiness. The affect would decrease over time lasting no more than 24 hours.

It will bite repeatedly if it has no way to run away. A spider's first instinct is to flee. They only bite if they have no other choice. If you held it against your skin, it may bite several times.
Some spiders have venom which can affect humans significantly and may require hospital visits. However, there are no Wolf spiders that are medically significant and spiders that are dangerous to humans are very rare.

Two of my favourite words in one hairy eight-legged lump of joy. Wolf and spider. I remember the first time I saw a wolf spider. I couldn't believe the critter was judging distance by going back and forth before jumping. I thought I had discovered a new species until two hours in the library taught me all about this amazing talent of theirs. Of course the wolf spiders in Ireland don't get as big as the ones in your neck of the woods, Queue, but they're just as fascinating.
Excellent photo as ever, wunderkind.

So far, with all my excursions, never been bitten by a spider.
Of course, any spider will bite if you poke it enough. :P
And I've never felt that one was chasing me. :P
Here they range in sizes that would fit on my thumbnail (some of the Pardosa genus) to the largest wolf spider in the US (Hogna carolinensis with a one inch long body).
