Skylar Ferroti in Parent Troubles

Romano buried her hands in the pockets of her trenchcoat as she angled her head so that her battered fedora kept the rainwater from splashing in her face. Skylar was torn, halfway up the ramp of her plane. She turned back unsure of what to do. If she stayed, her dad would skin her, but if she left—
“If you don't get on that plane,” Romano said. “You'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life...which if your dad finds you won't be that long!”
“Oh Romano!” Skylar dropped her bags and ran down the ramp. “I love you!” She swept the bat girl up in her arms and leaned in for a kiss. “Romano—”
“--WITH A TEMPERATURE HIGH OF EIGHTY DEGREES. IN SPORTS NEWS...” Romano opened her eyes with a moan as she slapped her alarm off. “Stupid weathermon.” She grumbled sleepily as she pulled the covers over her head. “Lousy rotten timing...”
About two minutes later Romano was dragged out of her bed by her dad. He let go of her tail after her backside hit the floor. This was their morning routine, as was the inevitable grumbling by Romano as she showered, dressed, ate and then flew off to get to school.
She yawned as she rubbed her eyes, only narrowly avoiding a tree. She'd gotten next to no sleep that night; being awoken every two hours by some dream or nightmare. Except for the last one which was rather nice...“Figures that'd be the one that gets interruped.” She complained. “It couldn't have been the one with the firing squad and Skylar's jerk-off dad...” Romano shuddered that had nothing to do with the cold, crisp morning winds.
Augustus Ferrotti, then just a Lt. Colonel in the Sinnoh Army, had led one of the units that suppressed the Revolutionary Canalave Commune that took power after toppling the local government. Romano's parents—radical writers and theorists—had been forced to flee for their lives, taking their six-year old daughter with them. Ten years and five identities later, the girl now known as Romano barely knew who she was anymore. Most of the time she didn't think about it. Romano really WAS who she was...sort of. Sometimes when something from her past blew up in her face she sometimes thought about the people she had been. What were her likes? What were her dislikes? Were they different from the ones she had now? Did she have any friends? She honestly didn't know. Even her birth name was lost to her.
Romano was in such a rare moment of introspection that she didn't notice Jennifer Marine or Emily Mentel standing outside the front doors until she landed right in front of them.
“Hello surfer girls! What's new and waxed up?” Romano grinned, shifting tracks.
Emily grinned. “Just our boards, so far. Whut up?”
Romano shrugged. “Just looking for Skylar...either of you two seen her?” The buizel scratched a spot between her tails and pointed inside. “Shiney Butt had a pretty long face...I mean, beyond the usual.” Jenn frowned. “I offered to giver her twenty minutes and some of my surfboard wax but she said no. I mean, she said NO to a naked backrub! That's just...that's just....dude!”
Emily nodded in agreement with Jenn. “It's like li'l vixen not loosing his pants for a month. Something is not right in the world.” Romano sighed.
“Skylar's a bit...upset because her dad is coming to visit.” She admitted. Jenn winced. Emily almost opened her eyes in shock.
“...Dude.” Emily nodded, comprehending. Romano gave a weak nod and then started inside. She found Skylar perched in a tree out in the school yard. Romano just flapped up to the branch above her, wrapping her tail around it so she could stare Skylar in the face—albeit from an upside down viewpoint.
Skylar finally noticed the upside down smiling face in front of her. “--AAAAHHH!” Skylar leaned back, almost falling out of the tree. She had to wave her arms and hug the trunk to stay up. “Jeeze, Romano!”
“You DO know you have wings right?” Romano wrinkled her nose. “And talons to latch into the tree?”
“Yeah well you surprised me...” Skylar mutterd lamely. She sighed. “I'm really feeling frazzled. Didn't get a wink of sleep last night.”
Romano patted Sky's back, idly thinking of toying with the zipper back there. “Any thoughts on what to do?”
“..You mean come clean?” Skylar looked at her. She shook her head. “No, Romano. I just...I can't do it. Everyone will be furious at me...EVERYONE: My dad, my teammates...everyone! I'll....I'll be all alone.”
Romano rubbed her back. “No you won't.” She said softly. “You're friends aren't the kind to abandon you. Be mad at you for a while, maybe; but abandon you? No. And even if they did....you'd always have me.” She admitted weakly.
Skylar crinkled her beak as she turned around to look at Romano...then looked slackjawed as she saw Romano blushing. “Um....Romano, I—” She coughed. “Wow. I guessed that you were bi...”
“I'm just sexual.” Romano shrugged. “Screw the hetero-, homo-, or bi- prefixes. But yeah. So...” She plastered such a ridiculous grin on her face that Skylar couldn't help but smile.
“Okay, I admit I'm a little curious.” Skylar laughed. “Or even a lot curious. And it's not like I haven't gotten offers...Tabitha and Jenn volunteered to help me 'figure it out' and I'm flattered that you're interested...but being curious isn't the same thing as a commitment yet. And right now I have other things on my mind...Okay?”
Romano gave a rueful chuckle. “Heh, sure. But anytime you wanna flash someone for reasons other than pure shock value--” she shook her head. “Sorry, you're right. This isn't the time or place....darnit.”
Skylar just sat and stared. “Dad'll be here tomorrow.”
“You going to meet him at the airport?” Romano asked. Skylar shook her head. “He said he wanted to take care of whatever meeting he's in town for before we met. He'll meet me here...at school. Just in time for my team's match against Team MR-2. They're JUNIORS to boot so Tessa will be sitting in to help coach us. It's a chance to show our stuff and a lot of extra pressure...at the worst possible time.”
Romano whistled tunelessly. “You want me to be there? For moral support?” She hastened to add. Skylar nodded, distractedly.
“Thanks. One way or another, after tomorrow, I'm gonna need it!”

For someone who hasn't decided exactly what her orientation is (at the time of this writing anyway) Skylar sure is getting a lot of attention from her own gender. But shiny birds need love too... Guess we'll have to see what kind of damage control abilities she has.
