Silverbirchis incredible.
She really went waaaaay overboard for this piece, I think. And it was a challenge, as she hadn't really drawn buildings or perspective things before, and with the portal trickery thrown in, I imagine it was extra challenging! But she pulled it off IN AMAZING STYLE and I love it to bits!
This was commissioned in preparation for the upcoming release of Godzilla 2014 (teaser) (full official trailer)
It's going to be EPIC.

Everything about this piece is amazing. Love it. :>
Until I noticed the streetlight in the foreground for scale, though, I thought it was much closer to the background, and that small!Rooth and big!Rooth were close to the same size. Therefore I wondered what the purpose of the portal was . . . I thought maybe it was a sly reference to the new Godzilla apparently being the biggest yet, with Rooth sizing up just a bit himself, in preparation.

I'm confused by what you're confused about, so I'll just 'splain what I see:
Top of lamp post in foreground is for scale. Compared to Rooth's foot, they're about equivalent sized.
The top of the lamp post in the background is barley the size of the tip of his claw.
This demonstrates that the foreground Rooth is 'small', and the background Rooth is 'very big'.
Key point: the portals are of two different sizes, and are what Rooth's employing to get big.
I recommend searching FA for "rooth portal" to see other crazy examples of the tricks you can do with different sized Portals. The possibilities are limitless! :)

I obviously phrased that poorly, sorry! I know (and adore!) your size-changing portal trick, but when I first saw the picture, I overlooked the lamp post and thought the foreground and background were close together, making Rooth almost (but not quite) the same size on both sides of the portal. I realized my mistake before posting my comment, but late enough that I'd spent time wondering "why bother with the portal if you're barely changing size or location?" Hopefully that clarifies my original message, at least a little. ^^;
Thanks for taking the time to explain the portal trick, though! I may not have needed the explanation, but I obviously sounded like I did, and I'm sure it'll help any future confused viewers. :> I just love the idea; so simple, yet it has endless applications.

Oh, ok, I see what you were getting at now. Well, the explanation is not wasted -- maybe someone else will come along and need it. It's not an easy concept to grasp at first. :)
And yes, looking at it now with a better understanding of what you meant, I see what you mean. With a bit of tweaking with the composition, that separation could be improved. Maybe we'll have a sequel. :)

Given my previous comment about portal physics, a single punch would send you up into the air where you would hang for a while, given your incredibly low mass to volume ratio, then float down gently. The effect would be like punching a very big balloon, except that the force of his much more massive fist would probably cause internal injury.
