The symbology for the apotropaic eyes is ancient; skyrim did not create the symbol. The oldest surviving apotropaic eyes are Greek and were used to ward of evil and malefactorum, and to prevent evils entry into an area. The simplest versions were displayed on Viking and Nordic Aetts and armor and was comported as a diamond shape with a bisecting line through the middle as the iris.
