I know I've shared this guy before but I recently found more pictures so I thought it would be cool to share a collage so you can get the full effect of how lame this costume really was, haha.
We all start somewhere - I definitely didn't have any "natural talent" for crafting or sewing. I was a painter and illustrator and couldn't sew a straight line :) But if you are really, really invested in learning a new skill, you can definitely learn it! PRACTICE!
This is my very first fursuit, finished in 2004! It was built on plastic mesh [NOT held together with tape, haha, I think i stitched it through with yarn?] with some foam on top and then I managed to fur it myself by draping the fabric over the shapes rather than using tape patterning [there wasn't any info on that back then!]
The eyes were cut from a bleach bottle, and the pupils were black pantyhose.
The tail was made by
and the paws were from another crafter; I had no idea how to sew.
The feet were made with a tutorial from
and the pawpads were paper.
The head was built using tutorials from
and
and Noblewolf, I think :p
I had NO idea what I was doing but I remember being really proud of this when it was finished, I had never made a costume like this before. It took me months to put together and I hid it from my college roommates because I knew they'd pick on me, haha. I wore it a few times and the plastic mesh eventually snapped and it fell apart. Alas!

Every single thing about the construction in this suit is sending me into Crazy Mid-2000s Fursuit Nostalgia Mode. Plastic mesh sewn together with yarn! Bleach bottle eyes! Pantyhose pupils! Draped furring! Folded vinyl nose! FEET PAWS WITH EXPOSED SHOE SOLES BUT PAWPADS. GOD, I remember ALL these tutorials and sites and this aesthetic, haha!
