Actually Samurai carried a Katana and Wakizashi, after the 16th century which replaced the Tanto - Tachi daisho. The Tanto's primary role was as a stabbing weapon with thicker one called Yoroidoshi for armor piercing.
Generally any blade to hand could be used for Seppuku but a tanto was used in planned Seppuku.
